DC HISTORY:

November 1, 1993: The cover of People magazine featured David and Shaun Cassidy.

November 11, 1971: David's first single as a solo performer, "Cherish", was released in the US. It rose to number nine on the Billboard chart, where it remained for eleven weeks.

November 25, 1977: "The Partridge Family, My Three Sons Thanksgiving Reunion," hosted by Fred MacMurray and Shirley Jones, aired on ABC, giving viewers an update on the cast members of the respective series.

November 25, 1981: Shaun Cassidy's daughter Caitlin Ann was born.

FACTS:

D.j. Ed Stewart was the voice who announced David on the "Cassidy Live"  album.  People have been under the impression that it was Tony Blackburn. Ed Stewart confirmed in a radio show in the UK recently that he was the voice, and not Tony.

ON THE SIDE:

Judge rejects eBay bootleg suit

NEW YORK (Billboard) - A San Francisco Superior Court judge has rejected a lawsuit against eBay.com charging that the online auction house knowingly sells illegally made recordings. The judge said that under federal law, Internet companies are not responsible for how third parties use their services. The complaint, filed last fall by Randall Stoner on behalf of the public, argued that a significant portion of the recordings of live performances or unreleased studio material auctioned at eBay are bootlegs or pirated and that eBay's services are designed to aid in illegal sales. However, in a Nov. 7 decision, Judge Stuart Pollak ruled that attempting to hold eBay responsible as the seller of items sold online is "no different from the unsuccessful attempts that have been made to hold computer service-providers liable as distributors rather than publishers of defamatory or pornographic materials."

While eBay officials say the suit was without merit, they acknowledge that bootlegs can make their way onto the site. Last October, eBay banned the sale of CD-R music items. Last summer, it launched a program for rights owners that alerts eBay when illegal goods are being sold on the site. eBay says that while it has no specific figures for music, it removes hundreds of suspect items per week.

Comments from the DC Fan Site of Norway:
When you bid on items on Ebay, be aware that there are bootlegs or CDR copies of David Cassidy and Partridge Family items around. Watch out especially for albums that were never released on CD. As for now that means all David Cassidy albums released in the 70's, except "Cherish." As for The Partridge Family that means "Crossword Puzzle" and "Bulletin Board." David Cassidy's albums "Romance" and "His Greatest Hits Live" were never released in the USA, but were released in Europe and Japan on CD. However, they are hard to come across, and CDR copies are often sold on Ebay, the seller claiming it is not a copy. The easiest way to find out is to check the color on the CD. If it's blue or green, it IS an illegal copy. Videos are very often also bootlegs. Watch out for TV-shows and live events. ("Man Undercover" has never been released on video). Our advice is never bid on an item before checking out the seller's feedback, or e-mail the seller before bidding to get details. Ebay is the best place to find hard-to-find Cassidy stuff and most sellers are great to deal with. Just be aware of the things above. If there are any questions, please e-mail me at David Cassidy Fan Club of Norway.

DAVID LIVE IN LAUGHLIN, NV

There were rumors about David Cassidy's outdoor concert in Laughlin on November 5 would be cancelled due to chances of rain. Well, the rain stayed away, and the concert was held as planned at the Harrah's Laughlin Amphitheater at 6:00pm.

Like the concerts in Atlantic City two months ago, this one was also sold out. And it seems like everybody had a blast. Some fans even mentioned that this one was even better than the concerts in Atlantic City.

The Laughlin concert was very much like the ones on the East Coast two months ago, but this time David had brought down the Copa girls and dancers from the Rio in Las Vegas, and not to forget Stuart Daylida. Like last time he was backed by the Lon Bronson Orchestra.

At first David was introduced as Johnny Flamingo, his character at the Copa, and he sang "Get Me to the Church on Time," "Old Black Magic," "Luck Be a Lady Tonight" and "Mack the Knife".

After an instrumental tune by the Lon Bronson Orchestra, David was reintroduced as himself, and he sang "I Can Feel Your Heartbeat," "I’ll Meet You Half Way," "No Bridge I Wouldn’t Cross," "Summer Days," "Echo Valley - 26809," "Lying To Myself," "Cherish," "Rock Me Baby," "I Woke Up In Love This Morning," and a swing band version of "C’Mon Get Happy." At this time David introduced Suzanne Crough, who played his littlest sibling Tracy in the Partridge Family TV series, in the audience, before he ended the concert with "I Think I Love You!" Like in Atlantic City, David's wife Sue and their son Beau were there.

Some fans were disappointed that David eliminated the naughty lyrics to "Rock Me Baby." During "C'Mon Get Happy" a fan approached the stage, and reached for his hand. David took it . This was an open invitation for fans to rush the stage, and a lot of fans did! Grown women were again acting like school girls from the 70's. And of course, they can't wait for David's next concert! In the meantime they can go and see him as Johnny Flamingo at the Rio in Las Vegas.

I would also like to mention that Sharry on the Shaun Cassidy Chat List handed over $180 dollars to Sue Shifrin-Cassidy and Kidscharities from the sales of the Shaun Cassidy Fanzine. The fanzine is still available and can be ordered from a link in the September and October newsletters, or from the links on the index page of the David Cassidy and Shaun Cassidy fansites of Norway (links to the left of this page).

I would like to thank Sharry and Jennifer from the Shaun Cassidy Chat List, and Dawn, Joyce, Meesh and Deborah from the David Cassidy Chat List for helping me out with this review. I wish I was there with you guys.  Special thanks to Jennifer of the C'Mon Get Happy website for letting me use one of their photos, and for getting the song list straight.

More CDs to be released in February

February 2001 will see the release of three more CDs from The Partridge Family and David Cassidy! Buddha Records will release "Crossword Puzzle", "Shopping Bag" and "Rock Me Baby"! Thanks to http://cmongethappy.com/ for this information.

November 1, 2000: The Laughlin Entertainer writes:

David Cassidy at Harrah's for one-nighter

When it comes to riding the bumpy wave of success, David Cassidy has been there, done that. From heady days as a teenage heartthrob in the 1970s to a more reclusive career in the "80s, Cassidy has known his share of ups and downs.
But these days he's enjoying a quite comfortable ride, thank you... and it is flavored with the sweet taste that comes from success of his own making.
Cassidy has found a new playground in the fertile show biz soil of Las Vegas. From his original appearance on the Strip in 1996 as the star of the MGM Grand's "EFX," and a run with the Las Vegas retro revue "The Rat Pack Is Back," Cassidy has become something of a toast of the town. He has earned numerous awards, new fame and self-respect. He currently performs with his co-star Sheena Easton in his semi-autobiographical show "David Cassidy At The Copa" at the Rio All-Suite Casino Resort.
This coming Sunday, Nov. 5, he makes a 90 mile venture south to make his first Laughlin appearance with his show at Harrah's. In a recent phone interview, Cassidy said he took the gig because he wanted to mix a little business with pleasure.
"I'm trying to view the future with a little less emphasis on work and more on relaxation," he said. "I've been at it non-stop for eight years. I'd like to have more time to enjoy things everyone else enjoys...such as the World Series and the Breeder's Cup.
"I'm looking forward to Laughlin," he said. "I wanted to come down, because I've heard good things about the outdoor amphitheater ... how beautiful it is, how beautiful Harrah's is.
"I'm bringing my band, most everybody in the show, my light people, my sound people. I'll be doing some stuff from the Rio "Copa' show ... also some of the old stuff, and some of the really new stuff. It's gonna cook. We'll have 22 pieces on stage. It's gonna be a big, big, slammin' thing. It will be a totally different menu, doing different things we can't do at the Rio. We'll have a new set...and I'm anxious and excited."
Cassidy's life finally seems to be going the direction he wants after tumultuous success at an early age. The son of actor Jack Cassidy and actress Evelyn Ward, he became a pop star after appearing with his stepmother, Shirley Jones in the television show The Partridge Family, from 1970-1974. The show was based on the singing group, the Cowsills. Almost from the beginning, the Partridge Family began adding up hits in their own right, such as "I Think I Love You," "Doesn't Somebody Want To Be Wanted," and "I'll Meet You Halfway."
During the same time, Cassidy launched his own solo career, with chart-toppers like his version of the Association's "Cherish." He also enjoyed wide success in England.
It didn't take Cassidy long to become disenchanted with the "bubble gum" image so he chose to leave the business at the height of his fame, taking time to reinvent himself ... to discover what was important to him.
"When I returned to work, I specifically chose not to compete with my earlier fame," he said.
In 1982, he tackled Broadway playing the title role in a long-running revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Two years later, he took over the leading role from Cliff Richard in Dave Clark's stage musical, Time. In 1993, he was cast with step-brother Shaun Cassidy and veteran singer Petula Clark in Bill Kenwright's ailing New York production of Willy Russell's gritty musical, Blood Brothers. This trio's performance stopped the show's otherwise imminent closure, and David Cassidy recreated the role of Mickey in subsequent productions of Blood Brothers in the West End, and on US and UK regional tours.
In 1996 Cassidy's next major assignment was on a somewhat larger scale, taking over the lead from Michael Crawford in the high-tech musical "EFX" at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. He's been breaking attendance records ever since.
He's thrilled that the success is, at last, about his work.
"I think it's wonderful," he states. "I'm fortunate that people want to come here to see me ... families, moms and dads, who have grown up with me ... which is phenomenal. Few in my business have enjoyed the longevity and I don't take that lightly. I had never taken for granted the people who have supported me over the years.
"They've seen my work on Broadway, in theater, films, television, even my days with The Partridge Family ... they've stayed with me and it's been a great journey, I have to say, both personally and professionally.
"I think ultimately they see the work. They know you're successful and famous, but it's really about the work. If you produce good, quality work, people will come to see it. I've always tried to keep the integrity and put out work I'm proud of ... it's entertainment ... we get them to laugh, we get them up and moving."
The best part of all is being taken seriously as an artist and musician.
"The fame isn't something I sought, and the money isn't the driving force ... it's all about the work," he explains. "When I get acknowledged for my work it feels like the best. It's more than I could ever have asked for."
Cassidy has written, arranged and co-produced the music for his current show, which confirms his reputation as one of the hardest working performers in the business. However, success has it's price when it comes to juggling family obligations.
"My priorities are family and work," he states. "My family has understood the demands that the work places on me ... following me from California to New York, London, and all over the United States. Being in Vegas the last four years has been great. We're in a great location, I can go into L.A. to see family. It's all about trying to find balance."
What keeps Cassidy grounded above all else is his sense of humor.
"I have the ability to laugh at myself," he states. "I don't have a lot of time for people who don't make time for laughter. To make people laugh is a joy and I consider myself lucky. And anyone who doesn't get that is pretty sad.
"I'm not terribly complex or complicated. I try to be straight-forward with integrity as a person. Even as a teenage star I saw myself as a very positive role model and I continue to put the kind of work on stage and film that brings light into people's lives."
Those lights go up this Sunday at 6 p.m. at the outdoor amphitheater at Harrah's Laughlin.

November 5, 2000: David Cassidy played live at the Harrah's Laughlin Amphitheater in Laughlin, NV. See review on top of this page.

November 8, 2000: The Las Vegas Review-Journal writes that "Rio headliner David Cassidy can raise all the horses he wants, but riding them is a no-no. He told People magazine (Nov. 13 issue) that his contract with The Rio includes a clause -- a nonriding rider if you will -- that forbids him from climbing aboard his thoroughbred racehorses. Too risky..."

November 11, 2000: The Las Vegas Sun writes "Despite working full time on "At the Copa" with co-star David Cassidy, Sheena Easton has found time to complete her 15th album. It's a campy, disco compilation appropriately titled "Fabulous."
Easton told Billboard magazine that she took on the project because it seemed like fun and was a good way to let go and be an all-out diva for a change. (Perhaps she was tired of letting Cassidy be the pro at that.)
"Fabulous" will be released in the U.K. this week and is expected to hit American shores early this spring. (Columnist Kate Maddox)

November 12, 2000: The Las Vegas Review-Journal writes that "Strip spies say The Rio has all but pulled the plug on David Cassidy and Sheena Easton and their production "At the Copa." Insiders hear the paperwork for the nonrenewal is in the finalizing stage with two months to go on the one-year contract. That's news to spokeswoman Tyri Squyers, who insists "there hasn't been a decision made either way." Easton, I'm hearing, is already exploring her next Strip gig..." (Norm Clarke)

November 13, 2000 issue of the People Magazine includes the following article:
The former star of The Partridge Family, now 50, has been enamored of horses since he was a boy. Riding, he says, helped him cope after his parents, actors Jack Cassidy and Evelyn Ward, divorced in 1953. Now living in Las Vegas (where he stars in the At the Copa revue) with his third wife, Sue Shifrin-Cassidy, 51, and their son Beau, 9, Cassidy keeps his 20 horses on farms in California (above, with racer-in-training Sook Loozy), Florida, New York and Canada.
I started buying horses when I was doing The Partridge Family and was a very wealthy guy. My first cost $40,000, which was a lot of money for a horse in 1973. It's a business for me now, but it's also my passion. Every free moment, I'm buying, selling, breeding, scheming, daydreaming and talking about thoroughbreds. My best horse ever, Lightning Touch, won the $100,000 purse in the Pomona Derby in 1985. I'm racing only about six today; breeding them is more important to me. I wish I could spend half the week on a farm - grooming horses, feeding them, petting them - but running a farm is a full-time job, and I don't need another responsibility. It's more fun to just visit. Whenever I can, I go to the races. My wife used to say, "You don't gamble? What are you doing there?" She's accepted it now. And I've accepted that I can't ride anymore. It's in my Vegas contract. If I break my leg or my neck, people who've invested in what I do onstage would lose a lot of money.

November 13-20, 2000: Dark nights at the Rio. David will not be performing this week.

November 14, 2000: The Las Vegas Sun writes that "Insiders are now saying that Rick Springfield and the MGM are thisclose to finalizing terms for Springfield to fill Tommy Tune's shoes when he leaves in January.
Springfield's manager Ron Weisner confirmed that both parties are indeed "in discussions," but he says Springfield hasn't decided what he will do.
(Hmmm, take over a multimillion-dollar Las Vegas production, or continue touring small venues in middle America playing to soccer moms and 1980s "General Hospital" fans ... wow, that's a toughie.)
Springfield is on tour in Wisconsin. The MGM would not return repeated calls for comment.
Springfield should recognize the tremendous career boost of a Vegas headlining opportunity. When the then-59-year-old Tune took over for David Cassidy in 1998, he added more dancing to the production to emphasize his renowned hoofing talents. (And he got to redo the dressing room. Bonus!)
Tune also managed a financial coup. Some reports had the Broadway star raking in over $100,000 a week for "EFX." Tune's New York pals confirmed "gobs of money" was what lured the Tony winner to Las Vegas.
As for the 51-year-old Springfield, the only development that might have halted the signing process was his September arrest for spousal abuse. But the former pinup patched things up with his wife, and the district attorney has since dropped all charges against him.
Springfield's expected "EFX" announcement should coincide with a mini-comeback of sorts. His new album is due out in January, and he will be the subject of an A&E biography in February." (Columnist Kate Maddox)

November 18, 2000: The Las Vegas Sun writes: "Cassidy spies say the former teen idol will close "At the Copa" after co-star Sheena Easton departs in January, but he'll maintain a four-wall deal with the Rio and produce a new show starring ... him." (Columnist Kate Maddox)

November 28, 2000: Las Vegas Review-Journal writes: Big changes will be in store for the Rio's "At the Copa," including the fact that it might leave entirely or cease to exist with that title. The only thing that's certain at this point is that Sheena Easton will leave the show when her year's contract expires in mid-January.
The rest is up in the air. If the show remains, star David Cassidy could hire another star to replace Easton as the love interest, Ruby Bombay. Or he could drop the entire expensive Broadway musical structure and retro-swing story line to perform as a concert act -- as he did with successful results at Harrah's properties in Laughlin and Atlantic City this year.
Although Cassidy hasn't always had the smoothest relationship with the Rio brass, the show has averaged crowds of more than 500 each night without the hotel having to "paper" the room with comps.
Cassidy is also producer of "The Rat Pack Is Back" at the Sahara, which was scheduled to have former Rio headliner Steve Lippia join the show today as "Frank" -- no last names please, thanks to the litigious Sinatra estate.
Lippia's strong vocals -- if not a dead ringer for Sinatra, certainly good enough to be Steve Lawrence -- should give a lift to a show that has a winning format, but challenged to find performers who can approximate the Las Vegas legends.

November 29, 2000: Las Vegas Review-Journal writes:

CHARITY PROJECT: Recipe for Success

Junior League produces second cookbook with the help of many familiar names

By Joan Whitely (Review-Journal)

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman recently shared his personal recipe for making meatballs with the Junior League of Las Vegas, whose new cookbook is set to debut on Friday.
"Las Vegas Glitter to Gourmet" is the title of the book, which contains 225 recipes, including Goodman's for Mayoral Meatballs. Retailing for $24.95, the hardback volume has recipes from Junior League members as well as local professional chefs and celebrities.
The book will be available at major bookstores such as Barnes & Noble and Borders, as well as several retailers, including the Neiman Marcus store at the Fashion Show mall.
Goodman prepared his meatballs for lunch on a recent Saturday. He says he eats them at least once a month. His family enjoys the meatballs with a tomato sauce and pasta, but the mayor likes to eat them plain.
"I'm a purist. I just eat the meatballs in their natural form," Goodman jokes.
He says he got the recipe from two San Diego legal clients. Originally, Goodman called the recipe Mobster Meatballs because the clients "just so happened to be referred to by the prosecutor as mobsters."
Other celebrities who contributed to the book include Susan Anton, Bill Bayno, Lance Burton, David Cassidy and Phyllis McGuire. Nevada Sens. Richard Bryan and Harry Reid, both Democrats, also took part in the project.
Recipes also come from kitchen professionals, such as Sheila Conway at Canyon Gate Country Club, Stanton Ho at the Las Vegas Hilton, Jean Louis Palladin at Rio's Napa restaurant and Wolfgang Puck, who operates five local restaurants including Spago at the Forum Shops at Caesars.
By far, the bulk of recipes in "Las Vegas Glitter to Gourmet" originate with members of the Junior League of Las Vegas, a civic organization that last published a cookbook about 15 years ago.
According to cookbook chairwoman Kellie Creekmore-Guild, all the recipes have been tested in home kitchens, some as many as four times.
"We had tasting parties," recalls League member Dana Sheehan. Members made prospective recipes, then ate and graded the results. About 800 recipes were considered. Only about a quarter were accepted.
"We didn't want any that used Campbell's soup or cake mix," Sheehan says, to give a sense of the from-scratch nature of the recipes.
"I think, maybe (in) this one we have more celebrity recipes," says member Priscilla Scalley, who headed the prior cookbook project in 1985, "Winning at the Table," and helped with the current one. The latest book is "for locals, too, (although) we're also hoping to target the tourists."
"Las Vegas Glitter to Gourmet" is a coffee-table-style hardback with glossy paper. Throughout its pages are interspersed short facts about Las Vegas. In the appetizer section, which is titled "Opening Acts," for example, the book claims Las Vegas is the "most romantic city in the world," with approximately 50 wedding chapels.
The Junior League of Las Vegas is almost 55 years old. It has either launched or supported a range of projects including Ronald McDonald House of Greater Las Vegas, Shade Tree shelter for women and children, Lied Discovery Children's Museum and HELP of Southern Nevada. Cookbook proceeds will help the League with such community projects.

November 30, 2000: The Las Vegas Sun writes: "Tommy Tune, star of the MGM Grand's multi-million dollar production "EFX," will give his last performance in the show on Jan. 13, MGM Grand hotel-casino officials said.
The dancer came from New York originally planning to stay six months, but has been here for nearly two years.
Tune has won nine Tony awards for his work as a performer, choreographer and director on Broadway. After his final Las Vegas show, he will return to New York to work on another Broadway show called "Easter Parade."
A replacement for the 6-foot, 6-inch, 61-year-old performer will be announced in the near future.
He replaced David Cassidy, who had played the lead in the show from 1996 to 1998. Cassidy joined the show after Michael Crawford, who originated the part in 1995, left the show with an injury.

CASSIDYS IN BRIEF:

We're sorry to inform that Stephanie Lawrence, who starred opposite David Cassidy in England in 1987 in Time and in 1995 in Blood Brothers, sadly passed away November 4 at the age of 50.

David's youngest brother, Ryan, is working on another show  - a new one with Daymon Wayans. Thanks to Michele from Ryan's official website for the info.

TV Guide Online reported on November 21 that "estranged Hollywood couple Shirley Jones and funnyman Marty Ingels are getting back together. "We've worked it out," Ingels tells TV Guide Online. "Instead of giving the money to a lawyer, we decided to give it to a brilliant therapist."
The unlikely duo is wrapping up their six-month trial separation, and Ingels says he and TV's Partridge Family mom will be reunited in their Beverly Hills home by the end of the month. He also reveals that he's going to surprise his wife with a $3,000 bicycle-built-for-two with a fringed top — a nod to Jones's role in the movie classic Oklahoma!, which featured the hit song "Surrey with the Fringe on Top."
Ingels adds that they plan to celebrate their on-again, off-again 25-year relationship by inviting friends and family to a big party in January. That same month, the couple also will conduct a paid lecture on marriage — accompanied by therapist Ron Podell — through The Learning Tree in Los Angeles.
But it's not all good news. Ingels says his wife's famous sons — particularly TV producer Sean Cassidy — still don't see eye-to-eye with their stepdad. Ingels, who in the past has blamed the kids for driving a wedge between he and Jones, says he's agreed to keep his distance from them as part of the reconciliation.
"In a perfect world, Shirley should say to them, 'I happen to love my husband, that's my life, and you can't have me without having him,'" says Ingels. "But she just can't do that, and I don't ever want to be the one to separate her from seeing those kids and nine grandchildren.
"If they came to the door right now and said 'We did you wrong,' I would hug them and kiss them and start all over again," he adds. "I may be hard to take. I'm learning in therapy that I'm a crazed maniac and I press people's buttons, so I'm learning to be a more sensible person." — Rich Brown

David Cassidy is mentioned in the new Sal Mineo bio- the story about how he received Sal's drum set, then later mentioned as he was seen at the funeral. (Thanks to Cheryl for the info!)

News from Barbara of the Just David Fan Club: Sue Cassidy contacted me to let Shaun fans know that the "Born Too Late" LP that is being offered at the KC.org auction will be signed to the winning bidder by Shaun along with a personal message!
Also, David has agreed to do one more "At The Copa" backstage meet and greet with a winning fan while Sheena Easton is still in the show (this prize includes two tickets to "At The Copa"). It must be done before January 16th, 2001.  The show is closed from Dec. 12-25 for the Xmas Holiday.
They are not offering the Blood Brothers poster this time. The poster they are auctioning is from "Annie Get Your Gun"  signed by Patrick, Cheryl Ladd and the whole cast. (Thanks Barbara for the info!)
