Cassidy Live in Laughlin, Nevada!

For those who couldn't make it to Atlantic City in September, here's another chance: David Cassidy will  be appearing for one night only in concert in Laughlin, NV,  at the Harrah's property on Sunday, November 5.  It will be an OUTDOOR show, like the old days.  It will be at the Rio Vista Amphitheater and will begin at 6:00 p.m.  The "doors" will open at 5:00 p.m.

Harrah's Laughlin Amphitheater
2900 S. Casino Drive
Laughlin, NV 89029
702-298-4600
Tickets are $25, $30 and $35.

Fans going to the Laughlin concert have been asking if David will also be in the Copa show afterwards that night.  They said The Rio is selling tickets for Nov. 5th performance. David is NOT doing the Copa show on Nov. 5th.  The Copa show is dark that night.  He is doing only the Laughlin concert and that's it. Don't know why Rio is selling for that night, but there is no Copa show then. Those with Copa tickets should obtain a refund. (Thanks to Barbara from the Just David Fan Club for this information.)

Changes at the Copa

According to the October issue of the Las Vegas magazine there may be changes in store for the Rio show that stars David Cassidy and Sheena Easton in a production intended to evoke memories of New Yorks's Copacabana. The thinking of a few weeks ago - if it has not already been implemented - is that the story line of an aging entertainer remembering the old days of the Copa will be dumped in favor of a concert format. (Thanks to Nadine S. from the Cavid Cassidy Chatlist for this info.)

October 2, 2000: The Las Vegas Review-Journal writes:

Sinatra family member sues Las Vegas entertainer

Another Frank Sinatra family member is taking legal action against a Las Vegas entertainer --but with a different twist. This time the defendant is a longtime Sinatra pal.
Frank Sinatra Jr., has filed a lawsuit in Riverside, Calif., against Frankie Randall, whose show is a tribute to Ol' Blue Eyes.
Sinatra's son is suing Randall for a number of musical arrangements Randall claims he received from the legendary crooner about 15 months before his death.
Randall, a longtime Vegas entertainer, said he was attending Sinatra's celebrity golf tournament in early 1997 in Palm Springs when Sinatra agreed to send him the music.
Sinatra has given his music to a number of his friends -- among them Steve Lawrence, Vic Damone and Jerry Vale, according to Randall.
"We were pals. He always said he hoped guys like me would carry forward his music, whether it was me or Steve or Vic. You would think he (Sinatra's son) would respect the friendship. If I were Junior, I would attack someone who was disrespectful of his father."
He added, "there was never any agreement, any contract" to return the music.
In the past year, Tina Sinatra, one of Frank Sinatra's daughters, filed suit against David Cassidy and Don Reo, co-producers of the "The Rat Pack is Back," and the Desert Inn, alleging the illegal merchandising of Sinatra's image.

October 3, 2000: The Las Vegas Sun reports that Rick Springfield wishes he had Tommy's job. Tune, that is. Springfield is the latest name to crop up as a replacement for Tommy Tune, who will depart the show in January, when his contract expires.
Although there has been no official announcement from the MGM (a spokesperson offered a brief "No comment at this time"), Tune's pals back East are said to be eagerly awaiting his return to the Big Apple.
"New York is getting ready to receive him," said one source who has worked closely with the Broadway star for many years. "His apartment there is being prepared ... phones are already ringing with offers from old friends wanting to see him home soon."
That's not to say Tune hasn't enjoyed his two-year run on the MGM stage. A close friend of the performer added, "(Tune) has really enjoyed it there, and made gobs of money, so he's very happy he did it. But his heart belongs in New York."
OK. So, no more Tune. I'm hearing the MGM wasn't going to offer to renew even if he wanted to stay, but that's beside the point.
So enter Springfield. At one point, Donny Osmond's name was also in the running, but his publicist denied he was interested. My personal fave in the replacement rumor mill was Kathie Lee Gifford and her son Cody. The mother/son duo was slated to fill Tune's shoes -- for about a minute.
But Springfield looks like he might end up the lucky winner. A call to his publicist was not returned, but inside sources are certain the singer, who sells out the showroom at Sunset Station whenever he plays Vegas, is next up. In addition to Tune, the lead in "EFX" has also been played by Michael Crawford and David Cassidy.

October 6, 2000: The Las Vegas Sun writes:

Tune puts on a 'better' anniversary 'EFX' performance

By Joe Delaney

The MGM Grand production of "EFX," starring Tommy Tune, now in its fifth year, is in its third incarnation.
Michael Crawford was the first star of "EFX" and the show was structured to show off Crawford's English Music Hall virtuosity. David Cassidy, now at the Rio, succeeded Crawford and the production was restructured with a more youthful contemporary approach. Tune, a very tall Texan transplanted to Broadway, is a brilliant choreographer-dancer, a superb song-and-dance man. Again the production was restructured.
The more than 250 amazing special effects are all still there, including the talking head of James Earl Jones. Tune's contract is up in January, and the street talk is that he will leave then.
Broadway is beckoning, and Tune has indicated he is ready to return to musical theater. If the parting is mutual, MGM Grand's executive producer, Richard Sturm, need only find a performer with some marquee value who can sing and dance and fit in a story line restructured a third time.
Tune announced at the show caught that this was his 750th performance and appeared much more in tune with the production than was apparent a year or so ago. The large, talented and attractive cast also rose to the occasion. It was a much better performance.
There was a fun prologue with Sal, not billed, who involved the audience in some nonsense, a la the pre-show shenanigans for both "O" and "Mystere." The special effects took over with EFX Master Jones calling upon the Masters of Magic, Space, Time and Laughter. Tune arrived, and the journey began. It is a journey that is only possible if you dream -- and believe.
Next came the sequence in Camelot with Merlin and the wicked Morgana, followed by a circus segment, a tribute to P.T. Barnum with an incredible aerial performance by the Flying Kaganovitch. Tune had a song, tap-dance and chat insert here, closing with a cosmic (Celtic-flavored) jig.
Gone in the interest of time is the Houdini section with the lovely duet. The action went right to H.G. Wells and the time travel and the truncated rescue of the fair maiden. The closer was a medley of several selections involving the entire company. Audience response was strong.

October 6, 2000: The Las Vegas Sun writes: David Cassidy deserves recognition for his efforts on behalf of live music on stage, both in his "Live at the Copa" with Sheena Easton at the Rio and his production of "The Rat Pack Is Back" at the Sahara, each using full-musical complements under Lon Bronson ...

October 10, 2000: The Las Vegas Review-Journal writes: In keeping with its Broadway feel, the Flamingo's "Mars/Venus" show gives patrons a 16-page program complete with detailed biographies for its 10-member cast.
But one of the stars, Rick Pessagno, omits any mention of his previous job in Las Vegas. When the David Cassidy-Sheena Easton vehicle "At the Copa" opened at the Rio last winter, Pessagno was credited as the show's director and choreographer, as well as performing the role of Cassidy's rival, Lefty.
Pessagno left the show last summer -- Paul Vroom now plays Lefty -- but was certainly proud of his efforts last March, when he wrote to defend what he considered a critical savaging of Cassidy and the show that was given a B- rating in the Review-Journal.

October 17, 2000: The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that "The Rat Pack is Back" isn't going yet. Ever since early July, the Sahara's Frank Sinatra tribute show has been like a death-row melodrama: an appointment with the electric chair, then a dramatic stay of execution.
Now, instead of whistling "One for My Baby" at the end of October, the "Rat Pack" will be at the Sahara at least through Feb. 18.
"Why mess with a good thing?" says John McManus, the hotel's executive vice president and general counsel.
Some marketing changes helped: offering "Rat Pack" in dinner-show packages or in return for sitting through a time share pitch.
But it also suggests to the "imploders" of this town that enough people miss the old Las Vegas to hunt for the show, even if it means a scavenger hunt through the labyrinth Sahara to find the makeshift Congo Room in back of the buffet.
"The Rat Pack is Back" plays at 8 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays; and at 7:30 and 10 p.m. Tuesdays and Saturdays at the Sahara, 2535 Las Vegas Blvd. South. Tickets are $34.95. ... (Mike Weatherford's column).

October 24, 2000: David's first solo album, Cherish, is released on CD for the first time.

October 25, 2000: The Las Vegas Sun writes: The weekend ahead is rich with events themed to garner the best of Halloween. On Monday the Joint at the Hard Rock will host the Sam Schmidt Foundation's first HallowEve bash and fund-raiser.
Open to the public, the two-part evening will raise funds for the foundation formed after Indy Racing League star Sam Schmidt was paralyzed in a January racing accident. Schmidt, a Henderson resident, won the 1999 IRL race in Las Vegas just months before the accident. His foundation is dedicated to assisting those with spinal injuries to live a better life through scientific research, medical treatment and rehabilitation as well as the uses of new medical technology. Schmidt has stated, "We chose Las Vegas for this event because this is my home and as everyone knows, it's a great place to have a party."
The Monday event at the Joint will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a lavish dinner with guests to include two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Arie Luyendyk and other racing celebrities. A performance by Las Vegas headliner Andre-Philippe Gagnon is part of the Halloween entertainment. VIP tickets are $250 each with details on the fund-raiser or the Sam Schmidt Foundation available by calling (317) 387-0888. For those on the prowl for late-night fun, the Joint will offer more HallowEve fun starting at 11 p.m. Tickets are $25 with plenty of dance music and costume contests in the mix.
In similarly charitable fashion, the Auction, a special exposition and sale of antique and classic automobiles, will help the Wheelchairs for the World Foundation. For each of the 700 vehicles sold at the event Saturday and Sunday at the Imperial Palace, a wheelchair will be donated to the foundation's worldwide efforts. Further details are available by calling 794-3174.
Nothing will match the costumed revelry of late Sunday night at MGM Grand's Studio 54 when the Beaux Arts Ball kicks off at 10 p.m. Celebrity judges invited to participate in the judging of the spectacular costume contest include David Cassidy, Penn and Teller, Clint Holmes and Steve Wyrick. This almost-legendary gathering will bring together competitors in such categories as Best Celebrity Look-Alike, Best Drag, Best Group, Best Male and Best Female, among others, for trophies and cash prizes. Ticket sales for the event, which is open to the public, will benefit Aid for AIDS of Nevada and are $15 in advance; $20 at the door, with advance sales by calling AFAN at 382-2326.

October 28, 2000: Seen today in "The Times" (U.K.) newspaper magazine an article about Sheena Easton. It confirms that she is leaving the show in Las Vegas to return to Great Britain. Her contract runs until mid January, but she will be in Britain in November to promote her return and new album.

October 31, 2000: www.e-vegas.net writes: EFX has been busy seeking a replacement for Tommy Tune, who is leaving to return to Broadway early next year. The battle between the contenders for a replacement is as tight as the presidential race, and front runners seem to be Donny Osmond, who was slated as a replacement for Cassidy a few years back as well but opted to do Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat again. The other front runner is "Jessie’s Girl" singer and General Hospital Doctor Noah Drake Rick Springfield. Springfield seemed to be a shoe in till he had a run in with the law, as he seems to have mistreated his wife. EFX has not announced when their Election Day is.

October 31, 2000: The Las Vegas Sun writes: It's official. Tommy Tune will be leaving "EFX" on Jan. 15, exactly two years to the day after he took over the lead in the production show. Tune confirmed the decision Monday.
No official word yet on who will fill his shoes. Rick Springfield is apparently still in the running to land the lead, and Huey Lewis has been thrown into the mix. Lewis, once considered a front-runner to take over for David Cassidy before Tune came along, reportedly met with MGM Grand entertainment gurus last week.

The following can be read in the November issue of Just read this in the November issue of the Las Vegas Life:

Sulking Stars

'David Cassidy and Sheena Easton, attempting to co-exist at the Rio for another month until Sheena can get out of her At the Copa contract, not only don't speak to each other, but reps inform them when it's 'clear to walk' so they don't have to pass each other in the halls. This is all the result of a severe personality clash. According to the rumor mill, Cassidy feels that he gave Easton a great opportunity by casting her in At the Copa, but her attitude doesn't reflect the gratitude he feels he is owed.'

Patrick Cassidy's movie "Longtime Companion" will be rereleased on video. Expected release date is January 23, 2001. All-Movie Guide rating: 4 stars out of 5
At the time of Longtime Companion's release in 1990, the devastating disease of AIDS was seen as a mysterious and deadly scourge, replete with rumors, lies, and panic. As the first narrative film to examine the AIDS epidemic, screenwriter Craig Lucas and director Norman René place the disease in an historical context, dramatizing the impact of the disease through time in a series of vignettes involving seven gay men. AIDS first made its presence felt surreptitiously, as an article in The New York Times reported on a rare cancer attacking gay men called Karposi's syndrome. Then the Village Voice began a series of in-depth articles concerning a "gay plague" which later became known as AIDS. The film follows the AIDS crisis through the lives of the seven main characters so that they are only aware of AIDS in the historical framework of each episode. The characters include gay couple Willy (Campbell Scott) and John (Dermot Mulroney), first seen partying at a Fire Island club, who don't pay much attention to the mysterious article in The New York Times but become intimately effected by the disease. There is also Sean (Mark Lamos), a soap opera writer whose mind is slowly deteriorating because of the disease, and his supportive friend David (Bruce Davidson). In its detailed examination of everyday reality, this film put a human face on a blight that, in 1990, most people feared, and in its characters battling the disease gave audiences something to root for. -- Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide
(Patrick plays the character Howard)
