CHAPTER 3

Two cappacino's and three bon-bons later, Lexy was up in her room, recooperated from her almost-tragic fall. After a foot massage and a hot bath to ease the pain of her ankle, Lexy was starting to feel a bit better. Of course, this was all AFTER her mother berrated her with questions about this week's past events, and her father's continuous lecture of being careful when investigating a crime. But that was all over now. Now Lexy was able to relax and be alone in her thoughts. Sitting on her bed listening to her walkman, she began to mentally kick herself for tuning out of conversations to think on her own. Look where that got her? She stupidly made a fool of herself by being confused in the first place.....not knowing where she was.......what was going on......who was talking to her.

*OMG, what if Jack asked me something important, and I completely ignored him! Nah, that can't be. He would have said something about it.....wouldn't he? Maybe if you were paying attention in the first place, LEXY! Ugh, I'm so embarassed! I can't believe what happened! How could I be so....so.....not there! I mean, what is my problem? Why am I feeling this way?*

"Ugh, I have a headache!" As she turned off her headphones, her computer sounded. "You've Got Mail." "No way am I going to answer fanmail. I can't even deal with my own problems right now!" Lexy just turned over on her back, and began to drift off into a slumber.

The next morning, Lexy got her usual wake-up call by Jen.

"Lexy? You awake yet? Listen, I need some advice. What do you wear to a bowling alley?"

"Ugh, Jen. Whatever. Maybe go simple today, nothing fancy. You are not going shopping on Madison Avenue or anything."

"Well, what are you wearing?"

"I'm not sure if I'm even going yet. I forgot to ask my mom about our arrangements for today."

"Oh, don't worry girl, I took care of it."

"What?" Lexy asked as she turned on her visual camera on her computer.

"Yeah, I called your mother last night and she was TOTALLY okay with you going with us today. Your mom is such a DIVA!"

"You asked my mom? How could you.......ugh, nevermind. Look, why do I have to go anyways?" There was silence for a moment, as Lexy got connected and came face to face with a skeptical Jen.

"You SO have the hots for Jack. Otherwise, you wouldn't care. What are you so afraid of........"

"I'm not afraid!"

Jen raised her eyebrow in disbelief, and said, "Uh huh, and purple is the new orange."

"Ugh, Jen. Just lay off it ok. I'm about to go nuclear here. Look, I'll call you later. My mom's calling me downstairs."

"LATERS!" Lexy took off her headset and went downstairs for breakfast.

"Mornin' sweety. I see your ankle is doing better today," her mother greeted.

"Yes, much better." As much as Lexy tried to avoid the subject of yesterday's events, her mother wouldn't let it go and insisted on Lexy going out with her friends.

"It will be fun, you'll see," her mother ended.
