CHAPTER 5

“Um, hi! Hehe, um, my name’s Nikky, Nikky Hess. I just moved in, these are my two best friends in the whole world, Robyn and Melissa. They’re helping me move in today.” I said trying to sound cool.

“May I see some I.D. please?” he asked huskily.

“Sure, just let me put these boxes down.” I said while putting the boxes down slowly. I reached into my back pocket and grabbed my wallet; I flipped through the plastic cards and pictures to my driver’s license.

“Here you go, it’s a really bad picture though, I’m not that photogenic I guess.” I said while handing the officer my license.

After a minute or two of comparing my license to my face he gave it back and said, “Nice to have you in the neighborhood, my name is Officer Downey. If you need anything just press speed dial 1. Have a nice day ladies.” He said while walking past me, Melissa and Robyn.

“That was close.” Melissa said.

“That’s a big duh.” Robyn replied sarcastically

“There’s nothing to hide, we’re innocent people moving into an apartment.” I said,

“Let’s just get this stuff into your room. Before my arms fall off.” Robyn suggested.

“Let’s.” Melissa confirmed.

I started walking up the stairs and wandered around the second floor a little bit, I finally found the perfect room for me. A room that over looked the park, had floor-length glass windows, and curtain rods that I could use to make the room look like it was from Home Furnishings. The floor was wooden and the walls were off-white, it looked like a loft type of apartment. I knew exactly where I was going to put my bed, my dressers and everything else. It was going to be beautiful.

It took the three of us about an hour-and-a-half to get all of the boxes out of my car. All of the equipment that it took for us to put together my bed was in the back of Melissa’s truck. It looked like my room before we put it all in my car. We started on the bed first; it took us a few minutes to figure out how to get the stupid frame put together.

“That piece goes over there Robyn, no not there, over there, not there, do I have to do this myself????”

“That would be helpful smart one.”

“Ok, gotcha, lightening up now.” After the project of the frame was done, the mattress was put on and the bed was made. By the time we were done with that, it was about 8:30 at night.

“Should we continue?” Robyn asked tiredly.

“No, we’ve been sitting, standing, and fixing all day, I think you guys need a break.” I replied. “I’ll put you up in a motel, k?” I continued.

“Perfect, I call shower first.” Melissa yelled.

“While you guys are in the motel, I’ll work on setting up my room. Unpacking the memories.”

“Have fun, see ya in the morning.”

“I’m coming with you, I don’t trust you with my credit card.” I replied laughing.

“You just don’t trust me, do you?” Robyn replied angrily.

“Of course I trust you, just not with my credit card. I’ve seen you in the mall with your mom’s credit card, you bought almost 1,000 dollars worth in an hour. I can’t pay off that type of stuff. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m poor.” I replied.

“You’re not poor, just helpless.” Robyn replied,

“THANX, NOW GET OUTTA HERE BEFORE I HAVE TO GET THAT SECURITY GUARD TO ARREST YOU!!!” Then we left.

The girls spent the night at the closest motel, Motel 6. It wasn’t that bad, they got free soaps and shampoos. I went back to the apartment and started sorting through some of the boxes, I guess I fell asleep because the last thing I remember was being woken up by the sleazoid on the back of the brochure.

“You fell asleep. Hi, I’m David, David Cate. I’m you’re new roomie. Nice to meet you finally Nichole.” He said extending a hand out to me.

I took it and said, “Hi, you can call me Nikky, nice to meet you too David. Being an honest person, can you tell me if I have any drool on my chin?”

“No, not that I can tell, at least.” He replied laughing.

“Well, if you’re going to be my roommate then you will see me at my worst, when I wake up. I need someone I can trust, can I trust you?” I asked.

“You can trust me, can I trust you? You don’t do any drugs or anything do you???”

“No, I find smoking and drugs absolutely revolting. You?”

“I drink a little, only at parties, but I don’t do drugs and I don’t smoke. By the way, I was hoping to have a party when you finally got settled in, do you think that you will be settled in by tomorrow night?”

“Um, yeah, I might. But you can have the party, I don’t mind. I might just spend the night in my room studying or looking over the books. Can I maybe have some of my friends drop over?”

“SURE!!! The more the merrier! Are they girls?”

“Yep, two beautiful, gorgeous girls. Total knock-outs.”

“Cool. So I’ll see you later then, bye, nice to meet you again,”

“Yep, you too.” And then he was gone. I finally got up off of the hardwood floor and ran into the bathroom, you have no idea what it feels like to have been sleeping in a sitting position on the floor all night and having to go pee.

I looked in the mirror and had no drool on my chin, I can trust this one, I said to myself. I got on a different outfit and grabbed my car keys and went to go get my girls. A half an hour later we came back. I had explained the whole party situation to them and they agreed to go, Melissa was ecstatic. The entire time that we were unpacking, she was talking about her mystery date, for 6 straight hours.

“Ok, you NEED to stop before I open a can of whop-ass on you.” Robyn said sarcastically.

“Well, guys, I think I’m in love.”

“Love, you don’t even know the guy, he doesn’t even know you. How can you say that you’re in love?” I said seriously.

“Well, I think he’s cute. And-“

“You think he’s cute? That’s not love, that’s lust. When you can say that you feel things like you’ve never felt before, feel things differently when you’re around him, then you can honestly say you’re in love. But right now, you’re in lust. You don’t even know the guy.”

“Oh, and you do?”

“I don’t know him, but I met him right before I came to get you guys. That’s more than I can say for you Mell.”

“GIRLS, LET’S STOP FIGHTING, STOP THE VIOLENCE!!!! NOW!” Robyn screamed at us. “I am so tired of all of us screaming at each other, we’ve been best friends since we could walk, I can’t lose you guys. I can’t lose any of you, but now that Nikky’s moving in here, I feel like I lost a part of my heart, a big part. I can’t survive without it; I can’t survive without you Nikky. You were there for me when things got crazy, when things got bad. You’re like the sister I never had.” She continued, and then she started crying. “I’m going to miss you so much. Don’t ruin this day for me, ok?” She said with streams coming down her face.

“Robyn, I could never lose you, just remember that. We will always be best friends, but we can’t be mothers to each other our entire life. We will all have to grow up eventually. I’m just doing it faster than you guys. I can’t hold back, it’s just not right to.” I replied. “Now come here before you crumble to the ground, k?” I said. Melissa was still in a shock-like state. “Melissa, you will grow-up too, just not right now, live your life, it’s a pain to grow-up without you’re friends, without the fun, it’s just not like normal types of people.”

“But I’ll miss you, I’ll miss Robyn too. It’s just not going to be the same without you here to boss us around.”

“That’s the thing about growing-up, you make your own decisions. YOU actually get to live your life.” I replied. “We haven’t had food in 6 hours, we’re all cranky and we need sugar, my treat.” I said.

“FOOD, MMMMM, SOUNDS TASTY………” Melissa said.

“We all good?” I asked aloud.

“We better be, I am not leaving you until we figure out what is up between the three of us.” Robyn said.

“I agree.” Melissa replied.

We went out and got ourselves some McDonalds. It was the only close place by, and we were hungry. We talked about the current situation, and we decided that every weekend, Melissa and Robyn would come out to visit me. We would go out into the city and go shopping. But when school starts up, the situation would change a bit. We would probably have to use e-mail and regular mail to keep in contact. But we would find something to keep us together, even if it meant for them to come and live with me.
