Don Micklem
is a millionaire American, settled in London and having his select group of friends
in high echelons of society. On his way to Venice for a vacation, he is
approached by Hilda Tregarth, wife of John Tregarth for help. It seems that
Tregarth had gone to Venice a month ago and vanished since then. A brief message
to his wife indicates that he is in some sort of trouble. Since Tregarth was a
war hero, Micklem follows up the case with the London police as well as Scotland
Yard, only to draw a blank. He comes to know from the US army intelligence that Tregarth
was actually an agent for the MI5, and he had defected to the Iron Curtain. In
Venice, Micklem continues his searches for the missing agent, only to find a
ruthless political organisation gunning for him, against the taut background of
Venice's sinister waterways.....
