Artifacts
Here you will find some of the artifacts or symbols that were used during both "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns". Not everything is listed here, just a few things of interest. Some of the information is taken directly off the Bonus Material of the "Ultimate Mummy DVD" (which if you don't have it, go grab it!). "*" show what has been taken directly from the DVD. Everything I, Lady Reeana, came up with from my research and you'll find out where in the Credit and Disclaimer section. also, as time goes on, I'll be adding more things here. So be sure to check back as the list will grow.
Book of the Dead
The true Book of the Dead is not a huge black book that is locked and can only be opened by a key. Far from it really. It was a bunch of Papyrus pages and was often buried with deceased royalty. In it are spells and tips about making a good impression to the gods in the afterlife. It even states that a Pharaoh should list the bad things he has NOT done to the gods to gain their favor. At times copies were wrapped up with the mummy, so they would not loose this precious guide book. There are still many copies of t his book in the world today, but none contain it's some two hundred chapters.
Canopic Jars
These limestone, or alabaster, jars were used to keep the organs of a mummy for use in the next life. Each one represented a son of the god Horus. They are- a human head, jackal's head, baboon's head, and a falcon's head. Later on, Egyptians stopped using the jars when they started wrapping the organs individually and put them back into the body of the deceased. This was in reaction to grave robbers stealing the jars.
Ankh
A hieroglyph that stands for "life". It is shaped like a cross with a loop on the top. In depictions of the pharaohs, they are often seen holding one or one is always nearby. *When Egyptian nobles were embalmed, a wooden ankh amulet would be placed at each of the four corners of the embalmer's platform. These carefully positioned ankhs mystically transformed the platform into a "table of life".
