The Ten Plagues

Here you'll discover more about the Ten Plagues of Egypt that appeared in "The Mummy". Remember, I'm lazy so "*" means I took the easy route and just put in what was on  "The Ultimate Mummy DVD".

During Biblical Times, Egypt kept Israelites as slaves. When the Pharaoh refused to let them worship their one god, Yahweh, He sent the Ten Plagues as punishment.

First Plague: Water turned to Blood

*The water of the river was changed into blood, causing the fish to die. Egyptians had to dig in the vicinity of the river for their drinking water.* When this plague showed up, Jonathan ( I loved it when he did this in the movie) quoted from the Bible,  "And the rivers and waters of Egypt ran red and were as blood." Not a direct quote from the Bible, but close enough for the dramatic moment in the movie (or funny when you see everyone spitting their drinks!). This verse can be found in the Bible under Exodus 7:20.

Second Plague: Frogs

*Frogs overran Egypt, teaming in the river and coming into the

palaces and houses of the Pharaoh's servants and subjects.*

This one didn't make it into the movie. It should have though (just the author's opinion!).

This can be found in the bible under Exodus 8.

Third Plague: The Gnats

*The dust of the earth was turned into Gnats which infested man and beast.* Another one that didn't make it into the movie, although it's kind of interesting that in the Bible it wasn't gnats (which are like flies) but lice that infested man and beast. The verse is Exodus 8:16.

Fourth Plague: The Flies

*Thick swarms of flies were set loose, filling the houses of the Egyptians and covering the ground which they stood.* This one did make it into the movie, in the form of Imhotep throwing them up at Rick and Jonathan. The verse is Exodus 8:21.

Fifth Plague: The Pestilence

*The Lord afflicted the livestock (cattle, etc.) of the fields with a severe pestilence

(sickness). All the livestock of the Egyptians died, but not one beast belonging

to the Israelites.* Nope, this one didn't make an appearance. The verse is Exodus 9.

Sixth Plague: Boils

*Moses and his brother, Aaron took double handfuls of soot (ash) from a furnace and scattered it toward the sky. It turned into a fine dust and caused festering boils on man and beast.* This was made it into the movie. Remember when the people of Cairo were on the streets and chanting "Imhotep", well did you get a good look at their faces? Yup, those nasty looking things are boils. This verse is Exodus 9:9.

Seventh Plague: Hail

*A midst lightning and thunder, fierce hail rained upon Egypt, striking down every man and beast that did not take shelter. Every tree in the fields and every growing thing was smashed except in the land of the Is realities where there was no hail.*  This one made a very dramatic entrance in to the movie. We got to see parts of Cairo destroyed by huge flaming balls. Even got to see a few men catch fire. Enough of the gory stuff, this verse is Exodus 9:22.

Eighth Plague: Locusts

*Locusts covered the ground, ate everything not destroyed by the hail and filled

the houses of the Pharaoh and his servants.* This was the first plague we saw in "The Mummy"

A little bit of FYI and behind the scenes stuff, the swarm you see heading for Hamunaptra and the one chasing them into the city ruins are computer generated. However, the ones that are shown on the Egyptologists were real. Yes, he let them put real ones all over him. This verse can be found at Exodus 10:4.

Ninth Plague: The Darkness

*Darkness fell upon Egypt, a darkness so dense that it could be felt. Men could see one another or move for three days.* This one made it's way into the movie, as a sign that Imhotep's powers were growing.  This is another one Jonathan quoted. He said "And he stretched forth his hand towards the heavens and there was darkness throughout the land of Egypt." In the movie it showed up as an Eclipse. In the Bible it was a thing of no sun light and no light period for the Egyptians. The Israelites had light sin their own homes. This verse is Exodus 10:21 and what Jonathan says is Exodus 10:22.

Tenth Plague: Death of the First Born

*The Lord went forth through Egypt and every first born in the

land died, from the first born of the Pharaoh to the first born of the slave girls and animals.

"But among the Israelites and their animals, not even a dog shall growl," said the Lord,

"so that you may know how the Lord distinguishes between Egyptian and Israelites."* This is one that would have ruined the movie if it had made it's way into there. Think about it, the following men could have died from it (not saying they would): Rick, Ardeth, Jonathan, most of the Americans. What kind of movie would that be? This verse is Exodus 11:5.

Disclaimer: This is to save my behind from a few people out there who nit pick about little things that they shouldn't waste their time on. I am by far not a Bible scholar, so If I got anything wrong, my apologies. Just send a kind e-mail to me, using the link below and if I feel you are right, I'll make the changes. Thank you.
