Orphaned Rick O'Connell joined the French
Foreign Legion in the1920's for adventure and a purpose in life. What he was met up with was the curse of the legendary City of the Dead- Hamunaptra. This multi gun
toting adventurer never expected that three years after a battle with Tuareg Horseman he'd be escorting the Librarian Evelyn Carnahan and her brother Jonathan in exchange for his freedom from a Cairo
prison. (One has to wonder where he keeps all of those guns that he
doesn't carry in his ever present Gunny Sack) The race is on between them and the Americans that
were lead by Rick's old Legionnaire
buddy Benny. |
Once there Rick assists Evy in her search for the Golden Book of Amun-Ra. And even though he and the rest get a pretty decent warning from
the Med-Jai leader, Ardeth Bay, they stay there! We see the blossoming romance between Rick and Evy as "The Mummy" progresses, much to her brother's annoyance. Rick shows that he is a kind hearted man with child like
tendencies and an incredible body. (sorry, the author here is having a
lisp of the hand!) Even though he just met Evy, Rick is automatically protective of her and proves his worth as a swashbuckling hero throughout the movie. He really struts his stuff and shows just how
spontaneous he can be with quick thinking
against Imhotep's mummy priests and even some mummified Med-Jai! |
In the end he defeats the bad guy, gets some treasure and gets the girl, while his future
brother-in-law gets the camel. |
"The Mummy Returns" brings us to eight years after the first defeat of Imhotep. Rick and Evy are married with a son, Alex (who is toooooo much like both his parents). Rick tries to give up the adventuring through old Egyptian tombs and disturbing things he knows better than to do, but with Evy around, she keeps him on his toes. Thanks to a dream she had they stumble across the Bracelet of Anubis and the adventure begins again. Next thing Rick knows his poor house is overrun with the reincarnated Anuck-Su-Namun (Imhotep's lover) and her groups of bad guys. Between him, Evy, Jonathan and Ardeth Bay, they discover that Imotep has been raised again and needs Rick's son, Alex (who, in a moment much like his mother's previous ones in the first movie, put the
Bracelet of Anubis on) to lead them to Am Sher, a mythical Oasis where the
Scorpion King rests. |
Rick gathers everyone up and off to Egypt once again to save the world. He races
against time to get his son back before the prophecy takes over and the
Scorpion King raises to once again control the Army of Anubis (hence the reason for needing Alex. Imhotep wants the army for himself and the Bracelet acts as a map and a key to the Oasis). Once he has thought that he has lost Evy for good, Rick goes on the rampage through the Golden
Pyramid at Am Sher and takes on both Imhotep and the
Scorpion King, proving Ardeth's claim that the tattoo on his wrist is a mark of a Warrior of God. Rick of course saves the day, discovers tat his son brought his wife back from the dead and again, gets the girl. |
Overall the character of Rick O'Connell is very refreshing after the decade or so of the Anti-Hero. It has been a long time since movie audiences have seen the old swashbuckling hero of old and seen it done well. Many kudos to Steven Sommers for creating this
magnificent creature that we all have come to cheer and love (not to mention drool!). |
