Jericho and Kristine:TV's newest love team
By Nenette Claudio

Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa, the stars of the tele-series Pangako Sa 'Yo shown nightly at ABS-CBN 2, are the newest love team emerging on the boob tube. On-and-off camera, they jibe perfectly together.

When asked if romance is brewing between them, both of them smiled. But they admit they like each other a lot. "He's likable. Any girl would really want him. He's a man, a real man," quips Kristine, a stunner at 17. "You will feel secure when you're with him because he will always defend you. He's a gentleman. He's a good and a professional actor. We're supportive of each other."

Bedimpled Jericho also has only good words to say about his leading lady. "We're comfortable with each other because our personalities jibe well," says the 21 year-old actor. "We help each other especially when there are scenes that are sensitive and difficult to handle. When there are kissing scenes, for instance, I ask her if she feels good about it. I tell her not to worry because it's plain work and we just get into the characters that we are portraying."

This Valentine, Kristine is not expecting to go out on a date. "I don't know what will happen. Perhaps, I'll be receiving flowers," she beams.

As for Jericho, he doesn't have any serious relationship at the moment. "I go out. I meet girls. But there's nothing serious. What's important is I have respect for girls." He says his future girlfriend should be fun-loving, spirited, open-minded, independent, sweet, sporty, 'cowboy', and a mama's girl.

At his age, he admits, there were "amazing" things that he did for love. "At one point, I went on a six to seven hour-trip to Baguio, to see a girl for 10 minutes, then I ent back to Manila to work again," he relates. "Another instance was when I was taping in Pampanga, I had no cell phone, and my girlfriend then was coming back from a trip. So I traveled to Manila to call her on a landline, after which I came back to Pampanga to continue taping. It was exhausting but I didn't feel it because I was happy and inspired."

Being the heartthrob that he is, how does he treat his female fans?

"When Pangako started, lalong dumami sila. I'm casual. I don't let the admiration and attention get into my head. Minsan kapag may nagpa-cute sa akin, nagpapa-cute na rin ako. I just have fun with them, and of course, I respect them."A dramatic actress in progress

Just like Jericho, Kristine is turning out to be a dramatic, young actress. In her five years in the business, her biggest break so far was when she appeared in Sa Sandaling Kailangan Mo Ako (with Marvin Agustin) and Pangako Sa 'Yo opposite Jericho Rosales.

Turning into a serious actor

Jericho, according to observers, is turning out to be a serious actor, developing depth and substance in evrey performance. "It comes out if you are really devoted to your work," he says.

He would like to be known as a serious actor. "I go for acting rather than popularity. You have to be realistic with your acting. As long as I stay in the business, and continue to do good films, I'm fine," he points out.

His talent in acting has not been left unnoticed. Last year, he was chosen as Best Actor for a single performance in Maalaala Mo Kaya, and was nominated as Best Supporting Actor for the movie Tanging Yaman

He takes his roles to heart. In his show, Pangako Sa 'Yo, Jericho says he is enamored with Angelo, his character. "I'm so attached that even at home I feel I am Angelo, I have to do other things (like basketball) to get it out of my system."

He does tapings for Pangako Sa 'Yo every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. "We normally finish Wednesday morning. Then I sleep, wake up, and go to the set Thursday morning. My only rest is on Sunday and Monday, but on those days, I have tapings for Munting Paraiso

He dreams of playing more challenging roles someday. "I want to play extreme, eccentric characters, like that of a hockey player, volleyball player, surfer, swimmer, an artist. I also like roles that would make you think. I'd like to do commercial films like the Matrix, or action drama like what Nicolas Cage and John Travolta have done. 'Yong tipong iidolohin ka ng mga bata, at napapasaya mo sila."

From his humble beginnings as pizza boy, Mr. Pogi winner, Ang Kaybol star, to Star Circle Batch 4, Jericho has truly gone a long way. In his four years in the business, Jericho has invested some of his earnings, and was able to help hi family. "I bought my mom a house in Antipolo, and all the basic necessities. For myself, I bought a Vitara car four years ago, and a surf board." (He goes surfing on weekends, during his free time.) He comes from a brood of four (one girl, three boys, and he's the third child). Another brother, Jeremiah, 16, is also joining show business.

To his fans, he says: "Don't stop dreaming, things do happen. Fill the world with love."

Jericho regrets that he is not able to finish his studies. "If I get the chance to study again, I will. I want to take up filmmaking or mass communication, something related to my job. Before I wanted to become a pilot, kaya lang malabo na ang mata ko," he tells.

Jericho hopes to earn respect, and recognition as an actor. "It's not how many awards you win, but how effective you have become as an actor."

DRAMATIC YOUNG ACTRESS
Says Kristine: "I think my bosses want me to become a dramatic actress. I try to get into my character. My emotions are based, partly, on my personal experiences, the script, and the motivation of our director."

The former member of Ang TV and Star Circle Batch 4 dreams of appearing in a fairy tale movie. "I've done almost everything- heavy drama, comedy, suspense, action movies. Actually, I'm quite okay na," says Kristine, who is soon to appear in the movie Hostage as leading lady of award-winning actor Cesar Monatno. "I also want to be paired with Aga Muhlach. I want him talaga, he's so charming, and he's a leading man material, just like Jericho."

She feels blessed that at her young age, she ws able to invest some of her showbiz earnings. She has three cars and a townhouse in Loyola Heights. She also plans to get another house in the same area. "We're planning to put up a business, but we're not sure about it. My mom is helping me plan it," says Kristine.

However, she regrets that she has to sacrifice her schooling because of showbiz work. "I've been repeating my third year high school (under the Distance Study Learning of ABS-CBN 2) for two years because of my hectic schedules. "It's really like that, you lose some, you gain some. Showbiz work is more rewarding compared to office work."

Add to these disadvantages, she says, is her lack of privacy and normalcy in her growing up years. "You can't go to places without being noticed. You have to choose your friends and the people you go out with," she quips. "But the good thing is that you earn a huge sum of money even at an early age; and you meet different people, and you go to different places."

From the looks of it, Kristine is fully enjoying her flourishing career. And love has to take a backseat in the meantime. "I want to enjoy myself first and I want to travel all over the world," she smiles.
