Like A Virgin You Can Dance The Immaculate 1984 1987 Collection
1990 "Into The
Groove" was not commercially released as a single in the United States. The song appeared only as the b-side of
"Angel". Consequently, the
song was not permitted to chart.
“Only when I’m dancing can I
feel this free” became yet another personal anthem for
legions of Madonna fans with
the release of “Into The Groove”. The
song was the b-
side of “Angel” in the United
States and was taken from the 1985 film, Desperately
Seeking Susan, starring Madonna and Rosanna Arquette. Due to the lack of a proper
commercial single, the song
was not permitted to chart in the United States. Had a
single been issued, it is
probable that the song would have easily topped the charts.
In the United Kingdom, one
country where a single was released, the song did in fact
reach #1. In that country, the song remains tied with
“Vogue” for Madonna’s longest-
running #1 hit.
The video is made entirely of
clips from the Desperately Seeking Susan film. In the
movie, Madonna played a
character much like herself, an eccentric man-eating con-
woman caught in a comedic web
of mistaken identity. With her
character, Madonna
continued to promote the
rebellious, uninhibited image that continually increased her
popularity. In one scene, a very flirtatious Madonna is
seen smoking marijuana and in
several clips can be seen
wearing a black, see-through bra.
Ironic though it was, Madonna
soon found herself receiving more attention for her role
in the film than the movie’s
leading actress, Rosanna Arquette. It is
one of the few
acting roles for which
Madonna would receive critical acclaim.
The movie went on to
be one of the highest
grossing films of 1985 and its key song, “Into The Groove”, is
said to have “virtually
defined the eighties’ emerging sound”.
