With the poor
chart performance of "Bad Girl," coupled with a public backlash
against Madonna's mega-
slut persona which
was shown most evidently by low sales statistics, the Queen of Pop wisely
decided
that an immediate
image change would be essential to the future growth of her career. With that said,
we welcome her next
single, "Rain," the first in a series of low-key ballads which
present us with a softer,
gentler Madonna. The song is incredibly well-produced and was
undoubtedly the most radio-friendly
track on the entire Erotica
album. Even though the song missed the
top 10, it was crucial in paving
Madonna's future success with ballads like
"I'll Remember," "Secret," "Take A
Bow," and "You'll See".
"Rain" continues today to be one of
Madonna's most often played catalogue songs.
"Rain" was promoted via a radio
version that deleted Madonna's fascinating spoken-word bridge as well
as much of the song's
strong production. Many fans agree that
the radio remix is one of the worst remixes
of any Madonna
track. Fortunately, the original album
version accompanies the gorgeous video.
The video was directed by Mark Romanek, who in 1995 would also direct the "Bedtime
Story" video,
and was originally
shot in black and white. Color was later
added to give the video its rich, lush look.
The effect was truly stunning, garnering the
video two technical awards at the 1993 MTV Video Music
Awards: one for best art direction and another
for best cinematography.
"Rain" is the only video from
the Erotica
project to win, or even be nominated for a VMA award. Interestingly, it is also the only
video from the
project in which Madonna remains fully dressed and seemingly minds her manners.
