About the College...
Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Medical College, more commonly known as "BJ Medical", is probably the best medical college in Maharashtra state, and one of the leading colleges in the country.
Situated next to the Pune Railway station, the main campus houses the B. J. Medical College and the Sassoon General Hospital - which is the teaching hospital which the college is affiliated to.
The college hostels are situated a little distance away, within walking distance of the college, hospital, Pune Camp (yeah !), and most of the happening places in town.
The College grounds have the gym, the badminton hall (a.k.a. "Baddie Hall"), the Carrom room, and the Table Tennis room.
Admission to the college is very tough, with only a top few percent of the HSC board rankers getting in. However, once a student gets into the college, he/she changes a lot (whether for the better or worse, is subjective - depending on whether you are a student, parent, or a professor !). (Check out "An Ode to the Class of 1993" written by some poetically inclined classmates of ours.)
On an average the annual passing percentage is about 50-60%. Actually, our batch had a passing percentage of close to 75-80% - ofcourse, that's one aspect of a constant phenomenon - our excellence (c'mon - this is our page, and we can be as narcissistic as we like !!!)
It wasn't only academics that we excelled in, we made full use of all the numerous extra-curricular opportunities the college offered us. Here we must give it to the college - We do not think any other medical college offers its students so many opportunities to display their talents in various avenues.
Among the extra-curricular activities were the Arts Circle, the Students Association (Gymkhana Management Committee - the "GMC"), the Mountaineering Club, the Drama club, Prachitee.....the list goes on. If you were inclined towards sport, you could try out your skills in cricket, football, badminton, table tennis, carrom, basketball, or just sweat yourself out in the gym.
Or maybe the Arts appeal to you more? Well, then you could try out your hand at painting, photography, etc for the Artex held regularly, or if you preferred music (not listening, but PLAYING it - you could participate in the Orchestra. Adrenaline junkies could join the Mountaineering club for "heights" of adventure. Dramatists had ample opportunities to make others laugh or cry.
The Sassoon Hospital is a large tertiary care hospital with a capacity of about 1300 beds, (but usually, on an average there are about 2000 inpatients). All care here is free, with a pretty good standard of care. The daily outpatient attendance is about 2,000 - yes, that IS right - 2,000 (phew !). Medical students generally start clinical postings in their second year, and do the urban half of their internships here.
Unfortunately there isn't an official site of our college - they still have not been introduced to the wonders of this cyber world you are currently in. We hope that in a little time, we can have a link to that site on this page.
