The Free Airwaves Campaign has not been created to change the face of radio, rather to add a new dimension to it. By creating a Low-Power FM service, the FCC and the DLRC is giving you access to local programming: local music, local news, a wide variety of political programming, and an entertainment alternative. And if we happen to change the face of radio, so be it.
The Oxley bill has passed in the house, and will be headed to the senate soon. It calls the FCC's new rule making ILLEGAL, and will effectively shut down the LPFM initiative. Due to pressure and mis-informative lobbying, the N.A.B. (National Association of Broadcasters) has given republicans the impression that LPFM will create interference with pre-existing commercial radio operations. This is a lie, and has been confirmed by signal study analysis both from the FCC's own engineers as well as an independent broadcast signal study.
FCC chairman William Kennard has publicly rebuked the N.A.B. for it's efforts to thwart the LPFM initiative.
