Salvation Army Recognizes Pomona's Generosity

Did you find it difficult maneuvering around the towers of Top Ramen located in Mr. Francis' math class last semester?

Well, it turns out that Pomona owes much of this year's food drive success to the Math Department. With students competing to see their class kill off the competition, hundreds of Pomona students were motivated to help the poor this past holiday season.

"The Math Department was responsible for 74 percent of the total cans collected," said HELP club sponsor Bob Finan.

Among this year's winners were Mr. Carver's, Mr. Lustik's, and Mr. Francis' 2nd hour class periods. Each group was rewarded with a doughnut and bagel party before winter break.

"Our school collected nearly 19,000 cans this year," said senior Lori Gutierrez.

Because of such an exceptional turn out, Pomona was recognized at the Channel Four Salvation Army Roundup Luncheon held the week before winter break.

Those chosen to attend were HELP Club officials Lori Gutierrez and Lyndsey Hale.

"We were invited to explain how our school became so successful," said Gutierrez. She attributed the school's success to good publicity and friendly competition.

"Pomona ranked the number one high school in Colorado to collect cans for the Salvation Army food drive," said Finan.

Gutierrez and Hale each received a certificate of recognition and a goody bag filled with little gifts such as a calendar, Christmas ornaments, and a copy of "A Christmas Carol" audio tape.

During the luncheon, Gutierrez and Hale were treated to great food provided by Chipolte's Mexican Grill, live music, and other entertainment. They enjoyed skits portraying how the donated food got from each school to the families who truly needed it. They heard guest speakers thanking all the participating schools for their help and support during a time of need, and enjoyed lively Christmas carols, compliments to the Salvation Army band.

Pomona has been involved in the food drive for 11 years, and this past December was the first time Pomona was recognized at the Salvation Army Roundup luncheon.

By participating in such a good cause, Pomona can remain a positive role model for other schools in the community to follow. Hopefully Pomona will be attending next year's luncheon with honors as well.
