*Sex, drugs, and rock and roll*

There’s No Love in the Love Dolls

All the bad puns you can think of were used as headlines for the articles about the split up of the Love Dolls. It was two months after Lizzy and Oz fought and Devon was out of rehab. He had been in an outpatient program for a month and he wasn’t going to fall off the wagon this time. Devon and Lizzy had been auditioning drummers for the entire month. No one was working out right.

“They just aren’t working.”

“I know, Dev. It’s because they aren’t Oz.” She had been chain-smoking her way through pack after pack of cigarettes. She was miserable and now it was even making her physically ill. They decided that the only thing they could do was go beg Oz to come back. Lizzy was elected to go because Oz may still be mad at Devon. Now she had to go talk to Oz.

She pulled hard on her fourth cigarette in the last ten minutes as she rode in the back of the cab to the last place on Earth she wanted to be. She had to do this, that she knew. She couldn’t just stand by and watch everything she had ever wanted collapse down around her. So now she had to go talk to him. She didn’t know what she was going to say. She just thought she would show up at his door and see what happened.

She laughed suddenly filled with the memory of their first interview. They were introduced as the personification of “sex, drugs, and rock and roll.” Little did they know how on target they were with that one.

“Now sex has to go beg at rock and roll’s feet because drugs has finally got his act together,” she thought. “How did I get on this crazy roller coaster ride anyway?”

She had barely finished her thought when the cab arrived at Oz’s home. Lizzy paid the driver and got out of the back. The cab sped off but she just stayed on the side walk staring at the condo. She finally trudged up the stairs and knocked on the door. Silvia answered the door.

“Lizzy. I’m so glad you’re here. He’s miserable. Just talk to him, get the band back together.” Silvia walked into the house and motioned for Lizzy to follow. “Oz there’s someone here to see you. I’m going to the store. I’ll be back in a bit. He’s right through there.” Silvia turned around and left, while Lizzy approached the door haltingly.

“Oz?”

“Lizzy, is that you?”

“Yes.” She came into the room to find him standing in the center as if her voice had stopped him there. “Jay, I’m so sorry.” She rarely ever called him Jay. In fact the last time she had called him that was at his grandmother’s funeral, when he was crying on her shoulder. “Come back to the band, please. We need you. Devon has got his act together. I don’t know what I can do to make you stop feeling like you take the back seat to me, but I’m willing to try anything. I need you. I miss you.”

“Lizzy, I’ve been so miserable without the band and you, especially you. I need you guys too. I want to come back. I can’t stand being separated from my best friend anymore.” Lizzy stepped forward and hugged him. She called Devon and they all went out to dinner. The Love Dolls were back together and more than happy about it. Now they just needed to get on a tour. They set up a meeting with their record company to talk about touring. It would only be a short one at first, but they were getting back on track and headed in the right direction.

Lizzy went to Robby’s house after the dinner celebration to tell him the good news. She ended up falling asleep on his couch. When she awoke the next morning, she was feeling very ill. She ran to his bathroom and threw up. Robby came to see what was wrong.

“How long have you been sick?”

“Robby, take me to the doctor. I don’t think I’m sick.”

“What’s wrong then?”

“I’m not sure but I think I might be pregnant.”

Robby took Lizzy to her doctor that morning. Lizzy was in an examination room and Robby was in the waiting room.

“Well, am I pregnant, doc?”

“Not only are you pregnant, you’re pregnant with twins.”

She knew it was at least two months along but she had to ask. Two months and it was Johnny, anymore and god only knows who. “How long?”

“Eight weeks.”

Johnny may be married but that was better than some groupie. She walked out to find Robby.

“So?”

“It’s twins Robby.”

“Congratulations, Lizzy.” He swept her up into a hug but she knew what he was about to ask. “Who is the father?”

“Johnny.”

“Johnny?”

“Yep, but he’s married. This is going to be real hard.” Robby stopped and looked at her intently over the hood of the car.

“Lizzy didn’t you hear, Johnny is divorced.”

“Since when?”

“It’s been in the works for about ten weeks but it was finalized three weeks ago. He still wants you, he’s just waiting for the right time. Of course, if you guys slept together two months ago and haven’t talked since, that could be why he hasn’t called you. Go talk to him. I’ll take you there right now if you want.”

“All right, take me.” They drove the rest of the way in silence. When Robby stopped the car, she leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. “Thanks for everything Robby.”

“Anytime, love doll, anytime.”

She walked up to Johnny’s door feeling very alone. For the second time in two months Johnny opened the door and stared at her in stunned silence.

“Johnny can I come in? We need to talk.”
