Welcome to Brer Tales; click on any link below to go to the associated story. I've been alternating between two very different authors who have interpreted Harris's Uncle Remus Tales in different time periods. You may be interested in comparing Julius Lester's style of interpretation with Anne Hessey's more modernized version. I prefer Julius Lester's version, which preserves more of the vernacular, the humor and the flavor of the original, and which is more obviously in the form of the old man telling tales to the boy. So the majority of the tales are from the Julius Lester books.
For a really interesting comparison, read "Brer Rabbit Gets Brer Fox's Dinner," written by Julius Lester and then read the original Joel Chandler Harris version. You'll understand why you rarely see the original versions; it takes a while to comprehend the text in its pure style. Write to me at RaggBaggRealm with any questions or suggestions. I don't have all the books with me at present but will try to answer your questions or direct you to other sources.
