Jerome
Bechard - #16
Forward / Team Captain
Bechard enters his sixth season with the Cottonmouths. He was
the first player ever signed in franchise history as well as the
only Captain in team history. Bechard is the franchise record
holder for most games played, penalty minutes for a career, and
penalty minutes in a single season (431 PIM during the 2000-2001
season). He also ranks high among other statistical categories
with 193 points (5th), 74 Goals (3rd),and 119 assists (5th).
Bechard is the only player in franchise history to record over
300 penalty minutes in a season. The Snakes Captain won the
CHL's Community Service Award during the 1999-2000 season.
Before suiting up for the Cottonmouths, Bechard played for the
Birmingham Bulls (1992-96), the New Haven Nighthawks (1990-92).
Beforehand "Boom-Boom" spent his junior days in
Moose-Jaw. Bechard is one 23 players in all of professional
hockey to record over 3,000 career penalty minutes. Jerome has
made Columbus his year round home as he resides outside of
Columbus with his wife Rhonda and their two daughters (Alex and
Kylie Marie).
David Brumby

Goalie
Brumby has been assigned by the Chicago Blackhawks. He is a five
year pro with monster numbers. His first season pro Brumby
played for the Columbus Chill of the ECHL. The next year he
played for the Chill as well as the Wheeling Nailers and the
Cleveland Lumberkjacks of the IHL. During the 1998-99 season
Brumby played for three teams in Providence, Charlotte and
Wheeling. The 1999-00 season was perhaps his best when he went
28-25-4 for the Jackson Bandits. he posted 7 shutouts with a
2.97 goals agianst average and a save percentage of .915. The
following season he played in Cleveland and Jackson.
Paul Buczkowski

Buczkowski is a sixth year pro who spent his time in juniors
leading the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League. His
final two seasons in Saskatoon Paul was the captain of his team
and led them in scoring with 42 goals during the 94-95 season.
His totals in juniors amounted to 337 games played with 126
goals and 224 assists. When Paul was finished as a junior he
took his talents overseas to Germany. In three season playing in
Germany Buczkowski tallied 127 goals and 112 assists in 137
games. His past two seasons have been played in America. During
the 1999-00 season Paul bolstered the Tallahassee Tigersharks
blueline leading the entire team in scoring with 69 points in 69
games. He also won the ECHL league award for community service.
Last season Buczkowski suited up for the San Antonio Iguanas
leading their defenseman in scoring with 21 goals and 33
assists. Paul will be playing his first season with the Snakes.
Kenny Corupe

Center
The Hamilton native was sent to the Cottonmouths by the Hamilton
Bulldogs. The centerman played for the Saint John Flames of the
AHL last season. He also played 12 games with the Johnstown
Chiefs of the ECHL posting eight points in 12 games.
Barry Dreger

Defenseman
Dreger is an 11 year pro who spent last season with the Houston
Aeros of the IHL. He was assigned by the Chicago Wolves of the
AHL. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound blueliner has averaged over 300
penalty minutes per season over his illustrious career. He
scored the Atlanta Thrashers first ever goal in an exhibition
game played at the Columbus Civic Center in 1998. Dreger has
spent the last 10 years playing in the IHL or the AHL.
Alex
Fomitchev - #71
Goaltender
Fomitchev was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the 9th Round
of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. "The Iron Curtain" was
assigned by the Edmonton Oilers to Columbus. Fomitchev split
time last year between Hamilton, Tallahassee, and Ashville. He
was consistently holding opponents to a 2.66 goals against
average. In Tallahassee Fomitchev went 16-8-2 with a .917 save
percentage. Fomitchev enters his second season as a pro. He
spent his junior hockey days in the WHL with Calgary and
Seattle. Before playing junior hockey Fomitchev grew up in
Moscow, Russia.
Mitch Fritz -

Left Wing
The second year pro is the biggest player ever to dawn the
Cottonmouth crest standing in at 6-foot-7 and 250-pounds. he
spent last season with the Tallahassee TigerSharks playing in 42
games with 70 penalty minutes and eight points. "The Big
Show" hails from Osoyoos, BC. He also played four games in
the AHL racking up 20 penalty minutes. Columbus obtained Fritz
in the ECHL Expansion Draft this summer.
J.J.
Hunter - #18
Center
J.J. Hunter was assigned by the Hamilton Bulldogs. The Shaunavan,
SASK native finished out the year last season with the Toledo
Storm where he posted five points in seven playoff games. In his
junior career Hunter played 202 games while posting 149 points.
He played his junior hockey with fellow teammate Mitch Fritz in
Kelowna. J.J posted one goal and two assist in three exhibition
games.
Alex
Johnstone #8
Defense
Johnstone has been dubbed the "Junkyard Dog" in
Columbus with his rough and tumble play. The 23 year old
defenseman has been assigned by the New Jersey Devils. he played
his junior hockey in Halifax with the Mooseheads. He and fellow
teammate Carlyle Lewis are both Devils property and long time
friends. They both grew up playing with each other and against
each other. He played his rookie season in 1999-00 with the
Augusta Lynx after starting the season In Albany. In 34 games
two years ago the Junkyard Dog posted 110 penalty minutes in 34
games. Last year Johnstone was in the UHL playing 72 games for
the Adirondack Red Wings. He had 240 penalty minutes in those 72
games.
Jeff
Kozakowski - #28
Defenseman
Kozakowski (pronounced Co-Za-Cow-Ski) played his college hockey
at Michigan State University. He played his rookie season in
1999-00 with the Mobile Mysticks racking up 30 assists on the
year and posting 90 penalty minutes in 59 games. Last season the
Garden City, MI native played 60 games with the B.C Icemen in
the UHL. With B.C. he posted 31 points in 60 games. Kozakowski's
birthday is on Halloween.
Nick Lent -

Right Wing
Lent was sent to Columbus by the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL.
The Westwood, MA native spent last season with the New Haven
Knights. With the Knights Lent performed strongly in the
playoffs with four points in eight games. Lent was a four-year
letterman in hockey for Providence College.
Carlyle Lewis

Right Wing
Lewis was sent to the Snakes from the New Jersey Devils. He
spent the last two seasons in Albany (AHL) racking up 356
penalty minutes in 137 career games. Before making his pro debut
with the River Rats Lewis played in the QMJHL. His final season
with the Halifax Mooseheads Lewis played an all around game with
47 points in 65 games. In addition to his scoring savvy Lewis
added 465 penalty minutes. The Middleton, NS native checks in at
6-foot-3 and 240-pounds.
Sean McAslan

Right Wing
McAslan was sent to Columbus by the Edmonton Oilers. The right
wing is making his pro debut with the Snakes. He played his
junior hockey days in Calgary with the Hitmen in the WHL. His
final season in Calgary McAslan produced 53 points in 51 games
while chipping in 137 penalty minutes. In his Cottonmouths debut
McAslan posted a goal and an assists in Columbus' 4-3 win over
Macon in the final exhibition game of the season.
Darren
McAusland - #15
Defenseman
Darren comes to Columbus after spending one year with the
Tallahassee Tigersharks. He has also played two seasons in the
Britsh League's with Newcastle. Before going abroad for hockey,
Darren played in the American Hockey League with the Portland
Pirates. His best season came in 1995-96 with the Pirates when
"D-Mac" posted 31 points in 69 games. His team also
went all the way to the Calder Cup Finals. The Grovedale, ALTA
native played his junior days in Seattle with the Thunderbirds
of the WHL.
Olivier Morin

Right Wing
Morin was assigned by the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL. The 23
year-old winger had his best season as a pro last year with 23
goals and 36 assists in 69 games. Morin also posted 102 penalty
minutes. The Montreal, PQ native is entering his fourth year in
the ECHL.
Geoff Peters

Center
Peters comes to Columbus from the Hamilton Bulldogs. He is a
second round draft choice of the Chicago Blackhawks. Overall
Peters was the 46th pick in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. He started
his career with the Indianapolis Ice of the IHL playing in only
two games after a Junior career in the OHL. The next year Geoff
suited up for the Canadian National Team posting 13 points in 38
games. The following year Peters posted 14 points in 68 games
with the Cleveland Lumberjacks of the IHL. Last year Peters
played in Norfolk for the Admirals of the AHL. He posted 21
points in 73 games.
Buddy Smith

Center
Smith is in his second stint with the Cottonmouths. The 5-foot-9
centerman played for the Cottonmouths previously in the CHL.
Before going to Columbus in 1998, Smith played three years at
Northern Michigan University. In 1999-00 Buddy played for the
Pee Dee Pride posting 53 points in 63 games, Including 37
assists. The Rochfort, ALTA native spent last season in Wheeling
posting 43 points in 52 games for the Nailers.
Jared Smyth -

Left Wing
Smyth played his rookie season last year in the ECHL while
posting 23 points in 67 games. He is the younger brother of
Edmonton Oiler star Ryan Smyth. The Red Deer, ALTA native played
in the WHL for four seasons. The first three with the Spokane
Chiefs followed by a split season between Spokane and the
Tri-City Americans.
Darren
Tiemstra - #4
Defenseman
Tiemstra is a physical defenseman making his rookie debut in
Columbus. He was assigned by the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL.
He played the last four years of his career at the University of
Alaska-Fairbanks. He played in 34 games with nine points in 71
penalty minutes his sophomore year. The Edmonton, ALTA native
stands in at 6-foot-2 and 220-pounds. |
