Keith Urban, Cyndi Thomson and the Wilkinsons visited with and performed for patients last week at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital in Nashville. Singing for the troops... On November 30th and December 1st Steve, Amanda, and Tyler gave a holiday concert for all the military personnel in and around Okinawa, Japan. It was held at the Kadena Air Force Base, and I'm sure a great time was had by all. In the studio... The Wilkinsons have been busy recording a new album, this time for their new label BNA records. Look for a single to come out early next year. New merchandise... Going to a Wilkinson show in the near future? They now have bandannas, magnets, individual photos, and tank tops available. ~We've Seen Em, We've Read Em, We Wanna Share Em~ This months review comes from Ethan in Indy. Thanks Ethan! The Aurora Farmers Fair is the largest in SE Indiana every year, held in the streets of this small town. Last night (10/6/01), the Wilkinsons played the main stage to close out the festival.....but first..... I arrived at noon their time (they're on Daylight time - the normal one - Gary knows this NOW!) and got a prime spot across the street rom the backstage area (and a big parking lot in between). The festival itself pretty much takes out the entire downtown district. I spent about an hour or so taking in the sights and sounds, like an Army band playing Sousa marches on the side of the streets. Eventually, I saw Mariah and Mary (her mother) and Brandi (I MEMBER YA!) as all of us took in performances of local high school show choirs ("Respect", "In The Mood", and "Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)" - the G-rated version - seem to be popular this year). We waited outside the seating area for them to set up the lighting. Later, Lauren, Kati, Cory, and Brian, showed up; and after about a 2-hour wait for them to set up, we got primo seats......but after I saw the tour buses arrive for BOTH the Wilkinsons and Trick Pony, who came on before them. It was interesting to see if both buses could fit in a small space; but they did. Thank God for the Aurora Lions! (more to come)..... Part 2: While there, we met a few Trick Pony fans, one who totally has a thing for Ira (the crazy one on the bass), and a couple from Lafayette who came for TP but stayed for the Wilks 'cause the guy like them too. In fact, they were with me when the buses pulled in. I saw the band get off, but not the Wilks, especially since TP's bus blocked the view. Oh well - no biggie. After a few hours of waiting, and the temperature dropping about 15 degrees throughout the night, the story was underway with the usual stuff the Lions do I guess before the shows. Local artist Terry Hahn did 4 of his own stuff for the crowd who seemed receptive of his work, except a bunch of ladies behind me who would NOT SHUT UP! Plus, they were Lions' Groupies apparently. Okay....... Oh yeah, B-105 in Cincinnati were promoting the concert and had four prize winners in the front row. They got to know me well - they were warned. HA! At about 8:40ish, Trick Pony made their entrance....and despite mike problems with Ira (at first) they blew the crowd away, seriously. They were highly energetic throughout their forty minute set. I was even surprised they pulled off a Fleetwood Mac cover, "Rhiannon", and did it well. Ira, as expected, was the comedian, putting flowers in his teeth, doing a John Anderson impersonation, and having the cojones to play in 40-degree weather where you can see your breath with no undershirt (he tore it off mid-show) and Tommy Hilfiger overalls. Enough for me to buy the CD? Can't say - but maybe enough for another show. They impressed me a lot. (see next reply) Part 3: I forget when the show started; but by when, the wind made it colder than before. And no TIE DYE for Tyler (of course not, he'd freeze a bit)!! Instead, a red spider sweatshirt. Amanda had a nice wool sweater too. Pretty much the show we all know and love with a few added elements.....for one, they had a new song to sing! It's a ballad called "Words" and has Amanda on lead; it "may or may not" be on the CD - so Michelle, be on the watch for it in three weeks! I like it - it's about (I'm guessing) how you can take back some things but not what you say, especially when breaking up. And they even pulled out "Hypothetically" from their bag - haven't heard that in a while. YES! And to help keep them warm, somehow, the Lions put a kerosene heater on the side of the stage. Mark and Gary even tried to keep their fingers toasting putting them to a podium light during the introductions. Got a good quote from Amanda during the show: maybe Tracey will have it for "The Word" soon........hint there, T. Got to meet them backstage and gave them more gifts: more of my mix tapes and two bags of Hershey's Hugs and Kisses (since they didn't do "Only A Kiss" in concert). Oh well. But still it was another great show, as was expected.....may be the last one for a while unless they do some one-off show somewhere round here. We'll see.... And a big what's up to everyone who was there! Later. Peace. For real. We need more concert reviews! Send us yours today at jecklund@black-hole.com and we'll put it in an upcoming issue. ~Where They Gonna Be?~ The Wilkinsons will soon start their Canadian tour. Those of you in Canada, hope you get a chance to see a show. Those of you in the US, they'll be back. *January dates will most likely be moved to April*
Please call the venues before traveling long distances, as all dates have the possibility of changing. It would kinda suck to go all that way to find out they werent performing. -Part 2 - Part 2 - Part 2 - Part 2 - Part 2 - Part 2 - Part 2 - Part 2 - ~*The Word*~ Table of Contents: Good
Ole Articles Attachment: ~Good Ole Articles~ This months article also comes from Anita Van Wyk. It's from when NBL first came out, but it's a good article. -Wednesday, August 19, 1998 - Family conquers Nashville Canadian father-and-kids trio The Wilkinsons rocket up the charts By ANIKA VAN WYK -- Sun Country Editor The rise to fame of the Canadian family group The Wilkinsons is truly a fairy tale. The singing trio of father Steve, 16-year-old daughter Amanda and 14-year-old son Tyler -- along with mom, Chris, and eight-year-old sister Kiaya -- moved to Nashville on Oct. 1 of last year. Their first CD, Nothing But Love, went on sale last Tuesday and their first single 26 Cents is already breaking records on its climb up the charts. It was the highest debuting single in Radio & Records history. They have played to crowds as big as 90,000 people and were invited to join Vince Gill on the legendary Grand Ole Opry stage. "It's one magic moment after another. We're really living the dream," says Steve, who writes many of the trio's songs. The tale of how they were discovered rivals Lana Turner's famed story of being approached in a drug store by a casting agent. About two weeks after arriving in the country music capital, the family from Belleville, Ont., decided to attend a Friday showcase of a friend at the Broken Spoke nightclub. At the club, they were asked if they wanted to open for their friend with a few songs. "We got up and sang three songs and never heard from a record rep that night, but on Monday the phone rang," says Steve. And, boy, did that phone ring! Within 10 days, they had sung for seven record companies and had offers from all (MCA, Dreamworks, Capitol, Lyric Street, Arista and Sony). "In spite of what people say, there wasn't really a bidding war. Nobody really wins those things. We were getting pulled in a lot of directions all at once, but it was a nice problem for an artist to have. "We decided after a lot of soul searching ... to go with Giant Records because they felt like family. It's important you feel comfortable because hopefully you'll be with them for a long time," adds the proud dad. And Calgary is an important piece of this dream-come-true. Steve and Chris decided to take advantage of the city's economic boom in 1980 and moved to Calgary for just over a year before the children were born. "Calgary was actually the first time I ever played before a live audience -- other than singing for relatives, which doesn't really count," recalls Steve. He doesn't remember the name of the club, but it was an open mike night and he was "trying to get my feet wet. I was pretty shy about being out in the public eye. "Thankfully, I got over that," he adds with a chuckle. And get over his shyness, he has. In the past few weeks, The Wilkinsons have been on Prime Time Country, CNN and have been interviewed by Country Weekly and People magazines. They've also zig-zagged the U.S. promoting their new CD. "It's been a great geography lesson for the kids." Steve and Chris are being careful and trying not to have their kids grow up too quickly. "The kids are really well grounded. Being a really tight family helps out a lot. "I'm sitting here at the kitchen table talking to you and Amanda is sitting here doing math. I'm probably more knocked out about all this -- they're takin' it all in stride. "They're allowed to be young people." He also says he knows that if anything happened to him and he wasn't around, "they'd stand up as mature adults." The family enjoys visiting Florida, as well as camping and fishing. To prove these kids are just like any other, Steve laughingly tells a story about Tyler when he was a boy of about four or five. The family was in their trailer at a campground, and though Steve had set the fishing rods aside with the hooks pulled right into the eye at the top, Tyler managed to get into them. A scream sent Steve running outside to find the youngster with a hook through his lip. "His top lip was white and, after I backed out the hook, I asked him why he had done that. He said, 'I wanted to know what the fish felt like.' I said to my wife: `He's not bad, he's just curious!' " He also confesses he doesn't want his daughter to be too curious. "Other young artists have come out and sung songs about 'make me feel like a woman.' I didn't want my 16-year-old daughter to feel like a woman at this point! "I'm sure a lot of fathers would sympathize with me on that." The youngest Wilkinson, Kiaya -- who Steve gushes looks just like Shirley Temple from the movie The Little Colonel -- is more interested in classical music and the idea of acting than joining her singing siblings. "The invitation is there. It was the same for the other two -- we let them make the choice. If she decides it's right for her, she's welcome," explains Steve. The Wilkinsons will return to Calgary next month for Country Music Week. They've been asked to present an award at the Terri Clark-hosted Canadian Country Music Association Awards Sept. 14 at the Jubilee Auditorium. "I've forgotten most of my good Edmontonian jokes, I'll have to brush up on them," teases Steve. ~The Special Person of the Month~ This months winner...*rat tat tat* is....Hollie! Congratulations!
