Whats Goin On?

The Wilkinson's have released a video for 1999. It features Amanda as lead character, the girlfriend who's going through a hard time with her boyfriend and it shows her in the end going to her family.

The Wilkinson's participated in a charity basketball game in Nashville on November the 7th 2000, hosted by Vince Gill. Captain Gill's White squad (featuring celebs such as Paul Brandt, Troy Gentry and Steve and Tyler Wilkinson) handily dispatched the Blue team (starring, among others, Cletus T. Judd, Mark Miller, Brad Paisley and Ray Benson) by a score of 69 to 47. Go Tyler and Steve! Afterwards there was a concert...The Wilkinsons stormed the stage next and dude - that Amanda can sing! She flat out blistered a song called "Real Bad Mood," which featured the hippest line of the night: "I'm a chain saw you don't wanna pull."

Beer Can Chicken
by Country Weekly

Please do not use this without the Words permission as Tracey typed this up herself :0)

The guitar-playing patriarch of The Wilkinsons is inspecting the roasting hen he's brought for one of his favorite recipes, Beer Can Chicken. "Plump and juicy, that's how I like 'em," says Steve, as he warms up half the double grill in the yard of the band's manager in Leiper's Fork, Tenn., just outside Nashville.

With Amanda putting the finishing touches on the potato salad in the kitchen, Tyler fetching the seasonings and wife Chris and youngest daughter Kiaya looking on, Steve recalls how he discovered this unusual recipe.

"I was at a flea market in the Florida Keys and bought this gallon jug of Billy Mack's Lip Slatherin' BBQ Sauce that I had fallen in love with down there," he says. The sauce vendor gave Steve an added bonus. "He handed me a little piece of paper and said, 'Try this out next time you have chicken. You might like it.' It was called Beer Up The Butt Chicken on this piece of paper, so that's how I got it." And it's as unusual as it sounds. "You place a half-can of beer, still in the can, in the cavity of the chicken," Steve explains as he warms up the double grill. "That can of beer serves a couple of purposes. The heated beer steams up the chicken and keeps it moist. The beer also helps the chicken roast more evenly." Steve says the concealed can also causes the chicken to sit upright on the grill.

"It's the funniest thing to look at while it's cooking," says Steve. "And when it's done, the little wings raise up to let you know. It's almost like the chicken is waving at you!"

"Yeah!" Tyler agrees, placing various seasoning shakers on the grill tray. "The chicken looks like it's having such a good time, it should be wearing a little hat or something."

"You won't believe how delicious it is," Amanda interrupts, placing a large bowl of potato salad and a raw vegetable plate on the nearby table. "It's so juicy and tender."

Tyler begins dusting the bird inside and out with generous portions of black pepper, garlic salt, chili powder and onion powder.

"I basically use seasonings I like," says Steve. "People can put what they want on it, things that they normally put on chicken. The thing I love about this recipe is that it's a no-brainer." Steve adds the finishing touch: He places the multi-spiced chicken over the beer can and places the fowl onto the unheated side of the grill.

"Okay, smile for the photographers and say 'Cheese,' " jokes Tyler, adding an unexpected side of ham to the proceedings.

"The first time I saw Dad do this I thought he was crazy," laughs Amanda, scooting off to the kitchen to start preparing a Caesar salad.

"We told the chicken that he wasn't allowed to drive home afterwards because of the beer," joked Tyler.

While the chicken begins to bake, Steve explains the difference between the Canadian and American definitions of "barbecue." "Down here in Nashville, they call it grilling," says Steve. "Back home, they call it barbecuing. When I came down here and was invited to somebody's house for a barbecue, I expected a grill. What I got was pulled pork on a bun with cole slaw." While most grilling is usually reserved for summer weather in Nashville, Steve reveals it's a year-round activity in Canada. "When I lived back home in Ontario, I had friends that would do it even when the weather wasn't the best," says Steve. "In cold weather, they would still grill, then bring it indoors afterwards."

Tyler checks on the grill, and then decides to serenade the chicken. "You are the wind beneath my wings," he sings, before jumping into the chorus of the popular R. Kelly song "I Believe I Can Fly." The family erupts into fits of laughter.

"C'mon baby, work with me," Tyler jokes, adopting the accent of a well-known fitness instructor. "Can you feel it, bird?" Are your thighs burning yet?" Sweat it out."

Amanda appears from the kitchen with bowls of salad and corn chips. "Nobody told me Richard Simmons was coming over for dinner," she deadpans, rolling her eyes.

A former carpenter, Steve not only writes most of the hit songs, sings harmony and lead occasionally and tours with his kids, but he cooks most of the family meals.

"I hate to cook," says wife Chris. "Steve's done most of the cooking for the last 20 years. But I pitch in. We have a deal where I'll clean up any mess he makes in the kitchen." "I think that's why our marriage has worked," Steve laughs. "I like to cook, but I'm no good with messes."

While Steve and the family relax and await their delicious chicken, he reveals the story behind the Wilkinsons' new single "Shame On Me." "I wrote it with Gary Burr," says Steve. "It's just a reminder to tell people you love how much they mean to you before you lose them."

Eighty minutes later, the bird is ready to be basted with Billy Mack's Lip-Slatherin' BBQ Sauce. "I prefer to brush on the sauce with about ten minutes cooking time left," says Steve.

"Good bird, you deserve a bath," says Tyler. "Oh Dad, you missed a spot."

A few minutes later, generous portions of chicken, potato salad and Caesar salad are doled out to hungry family members.

"Mmmm. That's good," says Amanda, enjoying a bite of tender dark meat.

"Dad, this chicken was definitely worth more...," says jokester Tyler, winding up for a laugh line, "...than 26 cents."

Recipe
Beer Can Chicken

Ingredients

1 medium size roasting chicken
1/2 can beer (still in the can)
1 shaker black pepper
1 shaker garlic salt
1 shaker chili powder
1 shaker onion powder
1 small bowl BBQ sauce

Preparation

Take one roasting chicken and dust well inside the cavity and outside with seasonings. Use seasonings to taste. When chicken is seasoned to your preference take half can of beer and place it in the cavity of the chicken. Make sure that chicken remains sitting upright, on the side of the grill that won't be directly over the flame. Now light and heat the other side of your gas grill to medium. Depending on the size of the chicken, cooking time should be one hour. As chicken cooks, the wings will raise up to indicate that it's done. The wingtip will look as though it's "waving" at you. Barbeque sauce can be poured over the chicken after it's cooked, but Steve prefers to brush it on during the last 10 minutes of cooking time.

Wilkinsons Explore New Vocal Terrain

It doesn't take long to notice that Tyler Wilkinson is the first lead singer on The Wilkinsons' current Top 40 single and Hot Shot video, "Jimmy's Got A Girlfriend." Many Wilkinsons fans were used to hearing Amanda sing lead, but now that16-year-old Tyler's voice has finished changing, the family trio has found themselves with more flexibility when it comes to choosing songs. "Jimmy's Got A Girlfriend" is the first Wilkinsons' song to feature Amanda and Tyler alternating lead vocals and as you listen to the weaving of the voices, you can hear an emerging new dimension to the group's sound. CountryCool.com had a chance to ask The Wilkinsons about how this new facet has affected their approach to music.

"The song really leads it all off," says father SteveWilkinson. "We find a song that we all like...something that we all likewhat it says and it fits us vocally and stylistically. Then it sort of becomes a thing between them to see which one of them it fits best. With some songs, it's no question, it's a unanimous, immediate decision. One of us will say, 'Well Tyler needs to sing this one!' Or Tyler will say, 'That's Amanda's all the way.'"

"It's the only time that Amanda and I are rivals," Tyler explains. "When we find a song that we both like, that's when the claws come out."

"But that's a good thing," Steve asserts. "It tells me they're passionate about it and they're musical instincts are coming through."

Tyler likens it to a scene from Deliverance: "Instead of dueling banjos, it's dueling voices."

Since most of us at CountryCool.com have met The Wilkinsons and we know full well bro and sis would never come to blows, we had to know how song disputes are finally settled. "We leave it up to the producers," says Amanda. "Either that or one of us will give up. We'll each learn the song and whoever sings it best...you can't argue with that. Whoever is putting the proper emotion into it. Either one of us will admit whose song it should be. 'Jimmy's Got A Girlfriend' is the only one [on Here And Now] where we switch off. We might have more songs that cater to that next time."

The Wilkinsons second album, Here And Now, is set for release April 4 and CountryCool.com will be bringing you a full-length feature on the group around that time. Written by Michael Hight

"In a way, I'm passed a little kid stage," Amanda reacted. "I have the right to vote and do certain things—but at the same time I'm still a teenager. There is responsibility of being an adult, too."

"This year I've had a number of rites of passage," Steve summed. "Amanda got her driver's license and then got a car and the first time I watched her drive away without me being in the car I got a lump in my throat. It was like the big yellow school bus that pulled away for the first time. It happens—that's what life is all about. O "SERIF" FACE="Times New Roman" LANG="0">

You've Seen Em....We Wanted To Hear About It...So Here's YOUR Concert Reviews!:

Indiana State Fair
by Ethan

After I left work for the weekend, I went to the fairgrounds at around 5 or so. I got near the grounds at 5 - it took me about 20 minutes to find a spot (after all, it was during peak attendance). Armed with my signs and other knick-knacks, I got near the Free Stage at around 5:30 - right when OUR HEROES were getting ready to do a radio interview with WFMS (the station sponsoring the show). Tyler was a big fan of the people mover - carrying people all around the grounds - and some lemon shakes. I got a good seat about the 8th row in - best that I've had in a while. I was armed with 2 rolls of film - in a quest to take better pictures (the Warsaw ones were a BIT too far away on my camera - hey, that ant's head looks like Amanda!).

They eventually took the stage at about 6:40 or so (10 min. late - but nobody minded). By then, there was a huge crowd in the stands - even some standing on the sidelines. There was a huge roar from the crowd. As always, the group was in top form. Their set list is pretty much the same, with a few exceptions: they played "Williamstown" and on "Not Today" Tyler sang lead a few keys higher than when I heard this in Warsaw. I held up plenty of signs, including my birthday one for Steve ("8/18/00 - Yes, it IS today - Happy Birthday, Steve" - twice during the show and once outside the radio booth). But the TURNING POINT came on "Outside Providence" -- yes, folks, I help up my own FRYING PAN and RAND McNALLY map in time with the lyrics. I didn't care about the response - but it seemed positive to me (Steve got a big chuckle out of it). Eventually, they noticed me (Steve pointed me out, calling me "The Sign Man" and everyone looked - I was a bit embarrassed. but Why should I be? (I'M A WILKINSOMNIAC, MAN!) and Amanda said that I was like MARY POPPINS pulling things out of my trick bag!! WHOA! I almost forgot - Amanda got in a few jabs at Tyler's expense over his voice - I think she said he was still going through puberty. Oh, baby! The teenagers on the left side of the stage screaming for Tyler didn't like that one bit!

After the show, standing in line for the Meet & Greet, I met some new fans from here in Indy, Amanda and Jade, who just signed up for the fan club that night! Amanda started her freshman year in high school today - I wished her well - she had them sign her school schedule card 'cuz it was all she had. I also met Christie (hope that's the right spelling) from Warsaw - she wasn't able to see them in her hometown but got to do it here (since she goes to Ball State).

Backstage at the tent, I gave them my bag of goodies: you guys will get a laugh out of this but I DON'T CARE! First, I gave them a homemade sign commentaring the Warsaw show (where it rained all day) - "Forget the CBS show - I SURVIVED WARSAW!). I even put my name on it so that THEY KNOW who gave it to them. And I get them the map and frying pan (with added bonuses of family-size Lipton Alfredo Noodles-n-Sauce and Chicken Rice-A-Roni for good measure - you gotta put SOMETHING IN THE PAN!) I also got him to sign another sign for my friend Amy's birthday back in Ohio, who also loves the Wilks but has no idea what's in store for her (ROTFL). And I gave him two birthday cards - one from myself for Amy; and the other representing all of you guys. I didn't stick around to see his reaction - but I'll bet he'll get a kick out of it. Honestly in my opinion, he was ecstatic over the noodles and Rice-a-Roni (Chris told me later on that he loves to cook so this was right up his alley!).

The Caymans
by David & Sara

This is a review of our recent trip to the Cayman Islands to see The Wilkinsons down there for a concert and some diving. It's called Fin Fair- it runs from late August to early October, and features different artists every few weeks. First, the weather was great. Well, great if you like hot and muggy (like Houston). But at least the hurricanes (Joyce and Keith) didn't cause any problems. Well, they did postpone the sinking of the mermaid because of the threat of Joyce (that decision had to be made a week in advance, to get the barge out there to do it). We had a direct flight from Houston to Grand Cayman via Cayman Airways. Well worth the extra $50 per ticket to avoid changing planes.

We got there on Wednesday afternoon. We took a cab to the hotel, and got checked into the room. Then went out to the outdoor bar to watch the CMA awards show on the outdoor TV. The Wilkinsons weren't on it (as I'm sure you all know).

On Thursday, about noon or so, I finally got Sara up (she is NOT a morning person). I got her to go out and watch me snorkel. I didn't want to do it by myself, without somebody watching. It's just not a safe thing to do. No matter HOW safely you do it, you should never snorkel or scuba alone.

Iguess I was out there about an hour, and had just climbed out of the ocean, when The Wilkinsons showed up. They were unpacking their brand-new scuba gear (provided by ScubaPro) - very nice stuff. They saw us, and we chatted for a while, while they were breaking out the gear (these guys didn't waste ANY time). They took their new stuff over to the pool to test it out. After an hour or so, I decided to go back into the water. The Wilkinsons soon followed (though they had scuba tanks on). I took a pic or two of Tyler in the water. Right after one pic, I saw Steve (underwater) frantically waving both hands at me. I interpreted this to mean "don't take any pics". I thought maybe the guys filming underwater (for a CMT special - see details later on) had exclusives for that dive. It turned out (I asked later) that Steve was just waving at me. I followed them for a while, until they just got so deep I couldn't really see them or the bottom all that well anymore. I then came back to the shallow parts, where I continued my attempts at taking pics of the fish.

We all rinsed our gear off, chatted off and on (there were a bunch of other people there talking with them, too), and we headed back to our room. As we were entering our room, I saw Tyler (I thought it was Ty) coming out of the room right next to us. I later confirmed that it was, indeed, Tyler. The Wilkinsons (all five of them) were staying RIGHT NEXT to us! I guess that's about as close as anybody's ever gonna get to The Wilkinsons at a hotel. BTW, the name of this hotel was Sunset House. It really is a "Hotel by Divers, for Divers". If you like to dive or snorkel, I highly recommend it. This is where The Wilkinsons always stay when they visit down there. They've got great access for shore dives. It's right on a coral reef. No sand (like on a beach) to get all in your gear. They've got boat trips that run several times a day, too. It's a little expensive, but EVERYTHING on the island is expensive. The restaurant is first-rate, too. Try the turtle steak if you ever go.

Later that night, while we were eating dinner, a man walked by our table (on his way to his table) and said "Hi" to us. I didn't know who he was, but knew he was somehow associated with The Wilkinsons. As he left the restaurant (he had obviously ordered ahead of time), he stopped again. I said "I'm David, and I didn't catch your name". It turns out that he is Bill Simmons, the manager for The Wilkinsons. I don't know how he knew us, unless he just saw us talking a lot to The Wilkinsons earlier in the day.

I also bumped into another fan club member (she was wearing her fan-club button) that day. She recognized me from my website! Amazing. She had flown down (by herself) from Pennyslvania. She had actually left on Tuesday afternoon, but didn't arrive until Wednesday afternoon (like us) because of the rain delays in Miami (they were getting a drenching from a tropical system). Tough break. Her name is Kathleen Rice.

I tried to get on the boat the next day with The Wilkinsons. But, it was a private charter. They had a whole crew filming them (and Jean-Michel Cousteau). It's gonna be a special that should air sometimes in January on CMT Canada. I had breakfast that morning with Kathleen (Sara's NOT a morning person, remember?). She came in just after I'd ordered, so I offered to let her sit and eat with me. We sat there for about an hour or so talking and eating.

About that time, The Wilkinsons and crew came in. They saw us, and said Hi. Kathleen went over and talked for a few minutes with them. Kathleen went on to snorkel at StingRay City (and a few other places). Sara and I went on the Atlantis submarine (down to 100 feet deep). It's expensive (about $70 per person), but well worth it. Highly recommended. We ate at the Hard Rock Cafe.

The next morning, the guy running the film crew (JR was his name) saw me and said that they'd like to interview me for the show. What? I had talked with one of the camera guys the day before, so I guess he mentioned I'd seen them 24 times now, etc. Anyway, for whatever reason, they never did interview me. Probably for the better. I watched them do an interview with The Wilkinsons and Jean-Michel Cousteau. Then they all headed off on another scuba trip.

Saturday morning, I had planned not to do any more snorkeling, since my gear was finally dry (and we were leaving early Sunday morning). But Chris saw me, and said they were doing a shore dive that morning, and invited me come along. Well, how could I refuse that? So, I went out snorkeling once again. Same old story - followed them for a while, came back to the shallows and tried to get more pics.

Tyler went back in the water with a re-breather. This is similar to a scuba tank, except it's a closed system. Which means there are NO bubbles. All the air is scrubbed, so it can be re-used. You can get over 6 hrs on a tank (compared to 1 on a regular scuba tank). It's what the Navy Seals use to avoid detection while diving in dangerous situations. Ty was just doing a 15-minute "introductory course". I got a few pics of him before hejumped in with the instructor. Tyler was really impressed with the re-breather. He said he never wants a regular scuba tank again! He's still gotta get more training on one, though. It requires more training, because you have to mix special air to use in it, and have to know how it works, and it uses all new dive tables, etc. These things just came out (for "normal" consumers)Â in the last year or so. They go for about $10,000. So, I'm sure Ty wants one for Christmas. I pointed out that I know a bunch of gals who might just take up a collection for him if Steve doesn't get him one for Christmas.

Just after noon on Saturday, I went out to the bar to get some lunch. Guess who was there? Joe Reed (bass player), Brian Franklin (guitar player), and David Turner (aka, DT, their road manager / production manger / sound man). I was surprised to see them. I thought it was an all-acoustic gig. DT told me that they had planned to air it on local TV (though I think that changed), so they wanted them there. I talked with all 3 of them for a while. Sharon (the lady who runs the fan club) was there, and she made sure that all us fan club members (just the 3 of us) got front-row seats for the concert that night. Thanks, Sharon!

Sorry, folks. I didn't get any pics of the concert. This was VACATION! A local group called "Gone Country" started off. They're not bad. Then a guy named Matt King. He's pretty darned good. DT told me he doesn't think Matt has a record deal yet (which would explain why I've never heard of him). He needs one. Come on Nashville. Wake up! Get this guy a record deal. Finally, The Wilkinsons went on. It was an awesome concert. It lasted for about an hour. I would've preferred an all-acoustic, but this was close enough. DT did an excellent job (as usual) with the sound. Unfortunately, they didn't do any of the new stuff (Oil and Water, Somewhere Before,Not Today), though they did do San Antonio Rose, and That's Where I Come From.

Afterwards, there wasn't really an official meet'n'greet. They just hung out at the bar and people went over and talked to them. I hung around and talked with DT some more. Finally, Steve came over and talked with me for a second. Sara and I just kinda sat around, not doing much. This next part gets interesting. Somehow, I missed it, but Sara told me about it. Sara saw Amanda and Tyler together (and didn't see Steve, though he was there). She wanted to say Hi, so walked up. It turns out they were all 3 talking to some guy. The guy sees Sara approach, and asks "Is this somebody I should meet?". Sara replied "No.". Steve puts his arm around Sara andsaid "That's not true. This is our good friend Sara". The guy shakes Sara's hand and says "Well, your friends are very talented." Sara replied "Yes. I know". (She always gets right to the point).Amanda came up and talked with us for a while. She hugged Sara and said "Thanks for coming to see, us, Sweetie".

We managed to talk with all five of them during the course of the trip. Never really a whole lot at any one particular time. We'd just bump into each other and chat for a few minutes. It was really a cool experience. If anybody ever gets the chance to do this Fin Fair thing (and they do it every year), definitely go. You'll love it.  I know that I plan to go back soon.

Ice Skating Rink Opening In Nashville
by Amanda B.

Hey Everyone! Guess what?? I met the Wilkinsons at this grandopening of an ice skating rink here in Tennessee! They were soooooo sweet!!!!! I didn't even know they were gonna be there I just went to hang out and I was talking to my friend and Tyler walked by and I was like he looks really familiar then Amanda walked by and I was like Oh my goodness!! So I thought they were going to a party upstairs but it turns out when I went into one of the rinks so watch some figure skating they were in there and I was like 10-20 feet away from them cause they were in the hockey box thingy! lol. Anyways they sang a few songs and all and then I saw these 2 girls getting they're autographs behind the box thing and I was like can you get their autograph for me and she was like I don't know and walked off. So they got their autographs and this little girl that did some figure skating walked up to me and was like they're busy right now but try to get them on the way out! And right as she was saying this they started walking out. So my mom grabbed their mom and was like can my daughter get their autograph? and she was like yea just follow us out. And right as they were like in this hallway to go outside Chris(the mom) grabbed Steve and was like can she get your autograph? And he was like sure just walk with us cause we have a lot of musicians waiting on us. So of course I was like sure! and he signed Then gave it to Tyler and he was like thanks! and I was like less then a foot away from all of them!!(My mom kept saying he kept looking at me but I only saw it once when he was staring at me for a sec.) Then Amanda signed it and was like Have a good time! And they left! They were sooooo awesome!! And they're all sooooo sweet!! Well, I gotta go! Sorry this is so long but if anyone wants to email me like if you're met them or anything email me at abryant14@yahoo.com             Love always,             Amanda B.

Last months question... What do you think of The Wilkinsons new video for 1999??

I thought it was the best yet!- Sarah its a great song. amanda sounds so good on it. and steve and tyler do a great job of harmonizing. and the video is cool too.- Kristina

Good song, great video...but the camera couldn't seem to really focus in on Tyler or Steve...I mean it showed them but it was like it wasn't in focus, maybe that's how it was supposed to be I dunno...I liked the video tho :-)Â Good idea!- Tracey

They look great.- Mackenzie

I liked the 1999 video. I thought that it was neat that it was shot in the dark. I think that they should of had a few extras in it though. -Saoirse

I REALLY LIKED THE CONCEPT FOR THE VIDEO. IT WAS COOL HOW AMANDA WAS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH HER BOYFRIEND AND SHE MET UP WITH STEVE AND TYLER IN THE END. IT WAS CUTE. MY FAVORITE PART IS WHEN STEVE MOTIONED TO TYLER LIKE WHERE IS SHE AND HE SHRUGED HIS SHOULDERS LIKE I DON'T KNOW.-CRYSTAL

I love the video; it fits the mood of the song well. If there's a meesage in there, it's that, in the end, you can turn to your family if you're having problems with anything. - Ethan

I love 1999! I think the reflections are awesome! That's my favorite part of it. - Lauren

i love the 1999 video it is so awesome. - nicole Meesa LOVED IT!...(duh) I thought it was a neato idea and really caught the theme of the song..you can always go to your family as well don't live in the past, live in the future...one question....WHAT IS IN THE CUP??? -Vanessa

The $100 Question...Email Us With Your Response! at starwarsgirls@hotmail.com Still on the topic of the 1999 video....What do you think is in Tylers cup?? Hopefully in the next issue we will have the result! Send us what you think!

And Then There's The Pole: If you could write a song about The Wilkinsons..what would the title be??

thats a tough question. someting with family..forever family? i dunno..- Kristina

Me and Lauren did! It's called Tyler Is A Jedi HEHE :0) Don't ask, we were in a weird mood that day!- Tracey

My original choice: "Thicker than Water" MY other choice (if Sly and the Family Stone don't mind): "Family Affair". SO SUE ME! - Ethan

if i could name a song for the wilkinsons it would be called "until the end" because i will be a wilkinsons fan until the end. - nicole

I can't write songs (or song titles), so I'll just steal an appropriate title or two: "You Had Me From Hello" "What A Difference You've Made In My Life" - David & Sara
