Chapter Twenty-Four

"D-E-A-D?" He stammered not fully accepting the fact that his first love was in fact dead.
"I'm sorry sir," the doctor nodded and silently turned away from the young man. "Is there anyone you would like me to call? I don't want you driving in your state of mind. A friend or family member maybe?" Brian searched the doctor's brown eyes and sighed, as tears continued to slide down his red cheeks.
"Yes," he choked. "Lauren, call Lauren."
"Just have a seat, she'll be here soon." The doctor retreated out of the waiting room. It was three o'clock in the morning and he knew the young man had gone through a lot in the past five hours, first learning his wife had been in a horrible accident then actually holding her hand as she died.

"Brian?" Lauren called staring at the pale figure who sat in the corner of a small white room.
"Laur," Brian whispered. "Lauren. Leighanne is dead." Lauren nearly fell into the chair next to her as Brian finished speaking.
"When," she choked.
"An hour ago," he mumbled feeling suddenly very cold.
"I'm so sorry Brian," Lauren whispered sitting next to Brian on the floor. "You're so cold," she murmured slipping off her jacket and placing it over his shoulders.
"Lauren," he whispered. "Don't leave me, promise not to leave me." Lauren nodded into his shoulder and smiled.
"I'll never leave you Brian, promise." Doubts filled her head as she held a now silent Brian, she felt his shoulders shake and knew he was crying. She closed her eyes and rocked him in her arms as they both drifted into a light sleep as the sun began to kiss the sky.

"I don't believe it," she cried. "I-I."
"I know Court," he held her tighter.
"I mean how? Brian?" She stammered, her brain just couldn't accept what it had just learned. She had just lost one of her best friends, and now it was her job to smile and to tell the world.
"I love you," he kissed her cheek.
"Thanks," she smiled as she crawled out of his arms and wondered out of their room. He didn't even attempt to follow her; he knew the pain she felt. Leighanne had been one of her best friends for along time, before Backstreet Boys. When Courtney was just a young teen, her father directed country music videos; one day Courtney was shadowing her father and it happened to be one of Leighanne's first acting jobs, before she hit the big time. Courtney smiled, even the 15 years between them didn't stop the immanent bound that they formed. Courtney collapsed on the nearest piece of furniture and began crying. She felt a blanket being pulled over her body and yawned. She cried herself to sleep on Nick's sofa.

"Courtney!" He shook her shoulders quickly. "Courtney!" He pleaded sitting on her stomach. "Wake up!" She moaned as she opened her eyes.
"You duffo! Get off me!" Nick climbed off her and stood near the sofa. "what time is it?"
"It's noon," he giggled. "You were tired. I picked Brian up at the hospital. That bitch Lauren was there. I dislike that girl. She's evil I swear Ney, she is." Courtney rolled her eyes.
"Nickolas," she kissed his cheek as he sat down next to her. "I've met Lauren, she's so sweet and kind. She does love Brian with all her heart."
"Is that so?" Nick cocked an eyebrow and snorted. "Then why did she leave him alone on the floor of the hospital in the middle of the night without saying goodbye?"
