What Is Homeschooling?
Homeschooling is a word that conjures up different things to different people but basically it describes the process of parents teaching their children at home. These parents, for whatever reason, decide the best education for their children can be gotten at home. I say "whatever reason" because the reasons people homeschool are as varied as the way they homeschool. Some common reasons for homeschooling are religious conviction, poor academic performance of private/public schools, lack of safety in private/public schools, peer dependency and negative socialization. There are many ways to homeschool ranging from "school at home" - with desks and a chalkboard and lots of textbooks - to "unschooling" which is allowing a child total freedom to learn with no specific work requirements. Most homeschoolers fall somewhere in between these extremes.
Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states with requirements varying per state. If you are interested in homeschooling, I recommend you contact your local state homeschooling organization to learn about the requirements in your area. Here is a site that can help you do just that:
