ROUGHING CUTS BETWEEN CHUCK AND TAILSTOCK CENTRE

Roughing out operations require heavy cuts and coarse feeds. When the workpiece extends away from the chuck jaws more than three times the diameter of grip the work must be supported by an outer bearing, namely , the tailstock centre or three point fixed steady. The cutting tool in this demonstration is tool shape No.3 (straight nosed rougher).

When taking roughing cuts on round bar it must be remembered that four jaw independent chucks offer greater gripping power.
