TRAVELLING STEADY SETUPS

Turning operations:
1. With pegs (points) of the steady clear of the workpiece mount a suitable tool (e.g. shape No.3) in the tool post at centre height.
2. Turn a diameter (oversize) for a short length.
3. Adjust the steady's rear peg to make light contact with the newly turned diameter.
4. Adjust the top peg to make light contact with the diameter.
5. With the cutting tool trailing behind the steady's pegs, turn this diameter to its given length.
6. Check the diameter for possible taper.
7. Reduction in diameter along its turned length indicates too much tension on the steady's rear peg.
8. Increase in diameter along its turned length indicates tension on the rear peg is too light.
