Thinking Of You

"Thinking of You" was the first song we ever wrote.
It all started from a simple riff that Ubi came up with. After a
practise one day we decided that it was time to do
our own stuff. I suppose all of us were getting
sick of doing the usual Living On A Prayer
and Streets Have No Name covers. It was actually
getting to the point where you could call us a Bon
Jovi / U2 Tribute Band.

Ubi and Spoo came over to my house for the daily
practise session a few days later; Hedge was in
work at the time. Ubi started off playing this
riff he had wrote some time before and then said
to me “Right, can you put words to that?”
He was putting me on the spot and I wasn’t sure where
to begin, I hadn’t written a serious song before.
I went to get a drink of water then sat back down.
Spoo looked up and asked, “So, what’s this
song going to be about? What’s the story behind
it?” Ubi and me just laughed but he was
right. “Will we do a love song?” Spoo suggested.
We listened to Ubi’s riff again and decided it
sounded “lovey” enough for a love song.

I started off with “My love…” It seemed fitting for a
love song. And then just messing around I
sang, “My thoughts are empty without you…” We just
took it from there and went a line each until
we had the whole song. It took about three
hours.

I remember that day I walked around just humming the
tune and feeling good. We had our first song down!
When we went to practise that week we played it,
Hedge had messed about with it a bit. It started
off with a slow riff for the first verse then
breaking into distortion and a faster riff. It
wasn’t until later that we slowed into down into a
more mellow tune.

And that’s how we got our first song down. We didn’t
have a clue what we were doing! But it was a good
start…

Say You'll Be There

After “Thinking Of You” Hedge was always saying he had
his own stuff written and we should have a look at
it, see if anything is useful. So he came down
to my house after work one night with his guitar
and a notepad. He threw me the pad and it had a
few lines of a song in it. I had a read of it and
was impressed. It’s hard enough getting the bloke
to talk let alone writing songs. He played out the
chords to it and asked me to sing. I asked him
what way it’s sung, what tune it goes to and
he replied “I don’t know, whatever way you want.”
So then I sat there for 1 ½ hours trying to get a
tune for these words, and trying to get Hedge to
sing.

Eventually we got it. Hedge had written the first
verse and the chorus along with the bridge. I
grabbed the guitar and started messing around
finding some chords to go in there. We wrote the
2nd verse and the other little bits in 3 hours and
by the end of the night we had this really
good song about a boy and girl who love each other
but are forced to be apart. They’d cry for
each other and do anything to protect everything
that’s happened between them.

If you know Hedge you know what he’s like. You’d never
really think of him as a songwriter but he
came out with this great song that day and it blew
me away.

A few days later we went into practise and as soon as
we finished practising that song we all had that
feeling like “This is the one…”

We have other songs written but not yet recorded but we do play them live at our gigs. They include "Living Life On The Edge" "Kiss These Tears Goodbye" "Too Young To Die" and "United We Fight, Together We Fall"We'll have information about these songs up soon.
