Enter Amandir

Amandir trudged through the Caralain Grass, pulling in the folds of her cloak more closely. The wind buffeted her small frame, stealing strands of blond hair from beneath her hood to dance in the breeze. Her eyes scanned the terrain ahead. There were dark mountains to the northeast-the Black Hills, if she remembered correctly. Directly to the east was Cairhien, filled with its nobles and their gaming tradition. She detested Cairhien. Besides, the nobles had fixed their disapproving gazes on her throughout the duration of her visit. She couldn't possibly be of their ilk, oh no! Light forbid she should enter their country again.

As her eyes fell on the Black Hills again, she noticed a taller mountain rising behind them. Perhaps she could go there. Abruptly the wind resurged, throwing her to the ground in a heap. She caught a mouthful of grass and dirt. Coughing, Amandir spit them out. "Blech!" Granted, they were better than sand, which left that gritty sensation in one's mouth. She was suddenly struck by a vision of falling on her face as a young child. Yes, she had run to grab an enormous shell, one of such pearly whiteness that it gleamed on the beach. Her tiny hands had grabbed it, fighting to lift it up. But it was too heavy. Suddenly, a scaly limb shot out and she was knocked to her feet. Amandir choked on sand as the creature sought to pull her. Turning her head, she caught a glimpse of a circular mouth filled with teeth. "Help me!" she screamed. The creature's breath was hot on her leg....

The wind blew again, jarring Amandir back to reality. No need to revisit that experience today. Shivering, she pulled herself to her feet, readjusted her cloak, and began walking towards the mountain.....
