Part 462
As Kevin and Lynne were making their way into their hotel, Nick’s and Howie’s buses were already well on their way toward Denver.
"GT asleep?" Nick looked up from his Game Boy as Becca wandered out from the back of the bus.
"Yeah, but it’s not as easy getting him to settle down as it was. I don’t know, Nick, it seems like sometimes the motion of the bus is more irritating than soothing to him." She ran her hands through her hair, and Nick knew by the look on her face that Garrett wasn’t really the problem.
"What about you?" he asked, turning off his game and reaching for her hand.
"Me? What about me?" she asked, puzzled.
"I know that going back to Denver has you on edge, baby, and I’m worried about you."
"Don’t be silly," she said, doing her best to plaster on a bright smile. "It’ll be fun."
Fun? Who the hell was she kidding? Nick frowned, and decided to try a different approach.
"How’s your headache?"
"Fine."
Great. Nick rolled his eyes and sighed.
Becca finally looked up at Nick. "I know you’re worried, but don’t be. Denver was a long time ago and it’s part of my past."
"Becca-" Nick began, but stopped. This was an exercise in futility.
Becca managed to change the subject. "I wonder how Lynne and Kevin are doing?" she smiled.
Nick smirked. "How they’re doing or ‘what’ they’re doing?"
Becca laughed. "Poor Kevin, he was beside himself tonight, wasn’t he? Every time he turned around he and Lynne were being interrupted."
"It’s not easy to wait when you want something so bad Bec." Nick touched her hand and threaded his fingers through hers. They looked into each other’s eyes and both knew exactly what the other was thinking. "Not much longer, Bec, I promise."
"I know, Nick," she sighed, settling on the seat beside him. "I’ll be so glad when the tour is over and we can go back home."
"I know, baby, but-"
"It will be so wonderful to sleep in my own bed again. Our six weeks will be up by then and I was thinking that we could go back to Tampa. It would be so romantic to take the boat back out to the island, wouldn’t it? I want our first time together again to be perfect." She sighed happily, leaning into Nick and closing her eyes.
Fuck. He should have known that she already had it all planned out. How the hell was he going to break it to her that there was no time? Their obligations were going to keep them in the New York area until well after the six-week mark.
"Bec, I’m not sure-" he began to explain, but realized she had fallen asleep. "Great," he said, sighing heavily once more. However, a small part of him was grateful for the reprieve, so he stretched out, shifting Becca so that she was tucked against his side. In no time he was asleep too, his arms wrapped around his wife and a contented smile on his face.
