Note from the President: Hello- May is here and gardens are growing, grass needs mowing, although I want to be outside, I would rather be sewing then weeding. Life is rough! Our speaker this month is Kay Nichols. I heard her speak a couple of years ago, and enjoyed it very much. Her trunk show is awesome.
Please check your home, garage and any storage facility you have for any guild items. ( Quilt racks, signs, posters, etc.) Any items you may be storing for the guild from past quilt shows and events. Please make a list including your name address, phone number and contact information. Give the list to me or Anne Wohlfiel. We hope to develop an ongoing inventory file of all items owned by the guild.
Thank you for your help, see you on the 27th. Bonnie Keen

Raffle Quilt 2009 We ( the guild’s board) are asking everyone to pick up a package of tickets to sell to friends and family and the general public. The quilt also needs to be displayed and tickets sold. We are asking members to volunteer to take the quilt to various venues and sell tickets. Last year, we sold at Farmer's Market, quilt shows and other guilds. We need members willing to travel, display and sell tickets. If you can think of any other venue that we can sell tickets at, please let the board know.
Also we will be giving a prize to the person who sells the most tickets and a prize to the person who sells the winning ticket.
Thank you the Guild Board Members

MISSING …. Does anyone have the guild’s quilt stand in storage? We can not remember who took it to keep it safe. The senior center does not allow us to keep it there, so someone had to take it home. We need the quilt stand to be able to display this year’s quilt at ticket sale events and meetings. Please let the board know if you have it… just bring it back to a meeting. I would really like to take a better picture of the quilt on the rack to promote sales of tickets.
Birthday Club: Please tape the back of your envelopes when sending out your fat quarters, the postage will be cheaper. REMEMBER, you are responsible for getting the fat quarters to the various birthday members.

Blotto Blocks JUNE 24 09 By Lee Collins
Lee presented the guild with a new block pattern called Spangle Stripes and Stars. Two simple patches gold stars on a blue background and red and white strips give this simple block a patriotic flair. (LEE CAUTIONED: BE SURE YOUR STRIPES GO HORIZONTAL NOT VERTICAL. THE STAR IS IN THE LEFT UPPER CORNER. )
Each completed block consists of two stripe patches and two star patches. Handouts of the pattern were passed out at the March meeting and will be available at future meetings. These blocks will be due at the JUNE MEETING.
Have you noticed that Lee’s collection of blocks keeps getting bigger? She is going to have a special quilt when it gets made. I am going to have to do some serious sewing if I want to give her a run for her money.

Charm Squares- May 09 Barbara Newtown Charm square exchange will be due in May.
There are 13 members signed up for this charm square exchange as of the April meeting.
(According to my EQ6 calculator one yard of fabric will give you more than enough blocks for exchange and some extra for your self. )
The theme is "I Spy". Choose three different fabrics (quilt shop quality) that feature something fun like an animal, vehicle, or toy; anything that a child would like to spy on his or her quilt.

Interview with Kay Nickols:
Last night I had a delightful conversation with Kay Nickols, our guest speaker for May. She is the author of the book, “ Wonderful One Fabric Quilts.” She had spent the day in Atlanta teaching classes in making quilts using one “wall paper style” border print fabric. I was able to ask Kay several questions about her quilting history.
Kay learned to quilt from her maternal grandmother. She helped her grandmother by cutting out cardboard templates that were used to piece her grandmother’s quilts. She learned simple quilting techniques then. When she got married and stayed home with her children, she made quilts for her family. Later, when she went to work as an educator she used quilting as her therapy. Kay did not take formal quilting classes until after the rotary cutter was invented and being used. Today, she is still taking classes in a quest to continue to learn and improve new skills and techniques. Within the past couple of years she has taken classes with Gwen Marston ( Little Quilts) and Kaye England. She also took classes, learning applique techniques from Jayne Townswick. She loves quilt cruises and has been on several. One of her favorite cruise was the one she took with Paula Nadlestern, learning how to use unique fabrics and different piecing techniques.
Kay is the member of several Michigan quilting groups and guilds. (Shiawassee Quilters, Capitol City, Lansing Patchers, Saginaw Piece-makers and Western Michigan Guild) She actively pursues more knowledge among other quilters. She will be working at the Capitol City Quilt Show at “The Summit” in the Capital Centre, on May 16th and 17th. She said this will be their guilds biggest show yet. They now have over 500 quilts for display and more vendors have signed up.
Kay has been teaching classes throughout the mid west, in Paducah and at the International Quilt Show in Houston. She has taught as far away as Morocco. Kay’s book came about when she was asked to submit a proposal to AQS. In 2008, her book was the third best seller and it is currently in it’s second printing. Kay said, “She has always been more interested in the “process of quilting” then in the actual patterns used for quilting.” Her favorite part of quilting is learning and using techniques and figuring out the puzzles that come with assembling a quilt. I asked Kay how she dealt with “quilter’s block.” Kay answered that she never had had an episode of quilter’s block, as she was always looking for the next quilting challenge.
Ever struggling with my own stash dilemma, the one question I asked Kay, that was a little off the wall was, “How big is your stash and how do you organize it.” She has confessed on her web pages she is a “fabraoholic” always on the look out for great fabric, especially when she travels. She described her sewing stash as one wall in her sewing room covered with her collection of yardage and large cuts of fabric. She has mostly wall paper border prints, she uses for her process. She also has several wire bins with smaller cuts and half bolts, those she keeps in a walk in closets. In addition all of her fabrics are sorted by color.
Currently Kay is working on a new process. All she would say is, “My quilting friends are excited about the new process and think other quilters will love it too.” She did not want to divulge too much since it is a work in progress. Hopefully she will be able to tell us more at her trunk show and lecture on May 27th. I am looking forward to her legendary three trunks of quilts.
