Submission Rules
Ok, due to the fact that I've actually been getting submissions lately, I think it's due time I post some rules on the kind I get. Before sending me your work, I request that you make sure that the submission itself and the email it's sent in follow these rules.
Fanfiction
The rules here are pretty simple. First off, it's gotta be original. That's first, foremost, and pretty duuuuh... if you ask me. No ripping off other people's hard work. Basing something off of the plotline of a movie or book or whatnot is fine...so long as it's hard to tell and you give the source credit.
Secondly, please spell-check! I can't stand it when people send something in, and I have to go through and spell-check every thing before I post it. That's not my job. That's yours. A tiny typo every few pages or something is fine, acceptable, and understandable. But just not spell-checking is no excuse. I don't care how great of a speller you think you are. There are such things as typing errors.
The third rule: grammar. I'm not talking then/than, who/whom, I'll fix those for you if you're really clueless. That I have no problem with. What I'm talking about is basic sentence structure: know what a coma is. Know when to put in a paragraph break. Split dialogue into different paragraphs for each speaker, that sort of thing. Everything I'll help with, but you've got to have the basic grasp on the concept.
Finally, please make sure you stay in the same tense through the story. Don't go switching back and forth between present and past. It drives me insane, not to mention, you more then likely will just get a letter back saying, "Fix this and I'll reconsider!" I've gotten pretty picky lately about that sort of thing, not to mention it's another one of those "you didn't read through it first" things.
Things not to send in:
Fanart
Here, I'm not so picky. It's all a matter of: will my mother kill me if she sees this? So basically, no explicit nudity. With fanart, pretty much anything goes, except for flat out yaoi/yuri pics. Implied I'll accept...but can we stay away from Goten and Trunks kissing? Thanks.
Email Etiquette
I'd really appreciate it if you submitting actually follow this. In all of the emails I've gotten, the sender is always really passive. I can understand being freaked about sending in a submission, it's kinda terrifying--the moment of truth and all: What if they don't like it? What if they think it's terrible? What if...if...if.... Don't worry about it with me. Just basically send me an email saying, "I'd like to submit, here's the submission" or something really similar. A basic teaser line (like what I have next to the link to each fic in my fanfic section) would be nice for fic submissions.
Examples of what not to say when sending me your work:
"I was wondering if you'd like to read my submission..."
If I wasn't willing, I wouldn't be accepting them.
"I was wonder if I could submit..."
I have "All submissions welcome" plastered all over my site. Don't ask. Submit.
"Could you read this and tell me what you think?"
You can send me this one, I'll read it and give you pointers and stuff, but that's all you'll get. I won't tell you whether or not I want it on my site, don't expect me to reply with "let me host this!" or anything of the like. I'll give you my feelings and opinions on the fic. If you want more then that, ask for it.
As far as attachments go, up to 2 fanart attachments per email...and please, wait for me to respond before you send me another. My email account isn't exactly happy with me...
With fanfics, send me the first chapter or two. That's usually how long it takes to make up one's mind about a fic. No more than 2 fics per submission.
Please title the email as "fanart submission" or "fanfic submission". Please do not put them in the same email...I mean it when my email account is full. And I usually don't get to a point that I can clear out my emails for at least 2 months. Attachments need to be jpgs or gifs (if fanarts) or htm, html, or txt. (I can take word docs, but it's harder on Phil. *pets computer* Poor thing.)
If sending me the URL to a page that your pic/fic is already on, go ahead and send them all to me in one email under the subject of "submission", just make sure that you split it into 2 emails if sending both art and fics; one for art, and one for fics. I'd prefer that you send me URLs...I have limited space in my hotmail account, and it'd be easier for me not to keep losing emails and having to post notices for people who sumbitted through the dates of "monkey and bob" to resubmit.
Please, do not submit more than 2 fanarts and/or fanfics in the course of the month - my account can't take it. If you have a multi-chaptered fic, send me the first chapter or two in the same email-sub. If I like what I'm reading, I'll ask to see what the rest is like. Let's face it - the sad reality is, if the first chapter or 2 doesn't grab the reader, s/he probably won't stick around.
If your work is not accepted, expect a reason why. I'll be gentle about it, no matter my opinions or reasons, but I will give you a reason. Consider it constructive critisism on a draft. It never hurts (at least it's not meant to), it's meant to help. I won't just say "sorry, can't accept" or anything like that. That's like adding insult to injury. If I don't accept, you'll get something along the lines of "thanks for submitting, but you didn't spell-check." (Yes, I will make you resubmit for not following said rules from the first half of the page.)
So that's it. Follow the rules, and you've got a pretty fair chance of being accepted. I'm not hard on fic submissions, by the way...but when you've got aspirations to be an English teacher, you expect certain things. And as far as art submissions, I'm desperately in need of an art section. Don't worry too much about being turned down.
If you've sent me a submission and haven't heard anything from me in 2 to 3 weeks, email me and find out what's up. I will respond as soon as I receive it. If you don't hear from me in 2 or 3 days, nothing's up, I'm just not online. Any longer then that, I'm grounded and/or school has become demanding. In which case, do not email me again until I respond...be that however long it takes. Just deal with me ppls, I do have a life. (Or at least, that's what I keep telling myself.)
