Before I start, let me apologise. No, really. I'll TRY
not to write this like a fanboy, but I'm not making any promises. Swear you'll tell me if I start worshiping Sonic? Or are you too late for that?
1991. Sega was going to release its Genesis
system, and needed a killer app. to rival Mario's games on the NES and SNES. They found it in Sonic. |
Sonic's most recent image,
seen in the Dreamcast game, Sonic Adventure. |
Sonic is the antithesis to Mario. Whereas the Italian
plumber is slow, laborious and...Italian, Sonic was sleek, probably aerodynamic and certainly very, very fast. Faster than any game seen before- including racers. And there lies his charm. Speed. More speed. And level design too. The beautifully crafted designs kept providing new challenges, and featured a perfect learning curve.
Since then Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles,
Sonic Jam compilation pack, Sonic R racing game, Sonic 3D (not strictly speaking 3D) Sonic Spinball, Sonic Drift, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine... and more have all been released on various formats. |

More characters were gradually introduced- Dr.
Robotnik (Bad guy- also known as Eggman) Miles 'Tails' Prower (the Fox), Knuckles the Echidna and Amy Rose (Sonic's self-proclaimed girlfriend) being the main ones.
Sonic's platform games- search for the 7 Chaos
Emeralds whilst defeating Robotnik- have been the most popular. Not flawless, but when a game is THAT fast perfection is near impossible to achieve.
Reading this back to myself, I realise I do sound
like a fanboy. Sorry about that. Couldn't help myself. |
