Attack on Civil Rights Two weeks ago, Peter Kirsanow of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission drew heat by suggesting that another terrorist attack on U.S. soil could stir public support for mass, ethnicity-based internments as during World War II. He did not advocate such detentions—in fact, he told the Voice that he was absolutely opposed. But he did say at a July 19 public hearing in Detroit packed with Muslim American advocates, "If there's another terrorist attack and if it's from a certain ethnic community . . . that the terrorists are from, you can forget about civil rights."
I'm glad that he is one of the people who Bush appointed to defend with his life our civil rights.
Boy Held Liable for $2M in Fire Damages: Saramento Bee This ruling is quite possibly one of the worst things I have ever heard. If a person can not be held liable in some states for credit card debt under the age of eighteen, most often not tried for a crime in the regualr courts, cooperated with authorities, turned himself in, pleaded guilty, and all of a sudden is held liable for $2M of a building? That had to be de-asbestosed anyway? And was held liable for the firefighting costs? And they don't want his insurance (well, his parents) to cover it, so it follows him forever? That's my idea of reform, guys. Great. Talk about being able to make up for stupid mistakes. Oh wait.
Next Summer... I either want to greyhound or drive cross-country. This can be Eric's and my vacation before I start teaching and he goes to law school. I just think it would be neat.
IF eric doesnt go to law school then we are going to make him go to the kitchen and put his head in the oven as i clean the kitchen Liz [207.172.69.100 | Ban ] [delete]
New Public Diplomacy Apparatus Right. To match the USIA the republicans cut. Oh yeah, the Americorps, which the Contract with America wanted to cut, which privatization of programs has led to things like Stina's check bouncing (I'm making shit up :) and now Bush wants to shore up. For how long???
The Andrea Haney and John Dolan Travelling Road Show... Its not fair, i'm going home that weekend. i do have to go home occasionally to see my brother and my friends. So everyone coming into town next weekend should push it off a weekend. Boo you.
My Day... Today has been extremely interesting. I first processed reprints. And have been doing so. ALL DAY. Tonight I'm going to Jenny's party. Hopefully, I'll grab some of the party animals along the way, as i have an updated list. Eric and I need to come up with our own spreadsheet for them, and all sorts of stuff. Yay for GB's new project. Only 178 left to go... ok, 4 aren't placed yet, so 174. I also read EVERYone's blog. Including the ones who havent updated.
A response to John... John does have a point. Slavery was terrible, and since we benefit from it without even being directly responsible, that is why we owe reparations for it. However, I do disagree that reparations in theory are deserving only by blacks. Slavery set up a culture in our society. American Apartheid post-slavery continued to entrench this culture in our society, and we're still dealing (no matter what the Supreme Court says) with vestiges of slavery today. LAtinos entered this culture that we had set up and were disadvantaged in a similar fashion. The function of reparations should not be "i broke your window, 130 years ago, heres $20 for it. It is "our mistakes led to a centuries-long state of oppression where you were denied a place anywhere near any equal playing field." Other minorities, other than blacks, have suffered from being placed in that state as well. The reparations money isn't an "im sorry" check, its "use this money to get the advantage that we denied your forbearers and consequently put their descendants in a worse-off position."
I use too many quotes, but I hope my message got across. We have to re-order society to make it equal. ACtive work needs to be done - equality will NOT spring up naturally. Markets don't solve for equality, same as they don't efficiently produce certain social goods.
But anyway, im back to work. I'm all wet, too. Stupid rain :)
The rest of our lives... Eric was talking about law schools today. So, to make sure he's actually going to do it, I'm doing 2 things. One, requesting applications for him from: UVa, GW, Georgetown, BU, and seeing that GMU (which is 12 blocks away, and in the top 50!) and BC's (2002) were online. I'm also posting it on here, so that way we can make sure he actually does it. I need cheerleaders, guys! Make sure Eric goes to law school :)
My psyche... I'm reactionary. This should not be a surprise to anyone.
I have the self - esteem of a gnat. This should also not surprise anyone.
I'm tired. This should also not surprise anyone.
I want to be friends with people, and I don't want to fall into Emily (GArin)'s category of "impossible to keep" long-distance friends. Blogs are not a sufficient means of communication, and I do like the telephone. Its more personable than e-mail. Especially cause I can't write (see Amy's blog for evidence). Sometimes, i just want to talk, i misinterpret written communication way too often. Sigh.
Cross the Ocean... I'm shocked at how quickly mail can get here from Taiwan. I got a package today (we had a course there, ive been getting lots of packages) that had been mailed on the 18th. It has a lot of ocean to cross! Now if I could only figure out how Fed-ex works.
More importantly, can anyone else not see my page very well? Let me know, cause I need to re-do the template, cause its not doing all i want it to. It loads fine on both my computers.
I got very upset as I wrote this. Its also significantly over the character limit for a single comment on her page. But I love children, and I know that Amy is not correct... So here it is...
1. But the difference is, the same as we have to provide accommodations for those people who have physical differences, religious differences, etc. These people cannot work without these accommodations. Do these people have no right to work? That’s why government steps in and makes standards. Moreso, lots of companies don't want to make even the simple accomodation of hiring a person of a different color than their own. Should they be allowed to do that? No, that's why the government makes standards. But I want to take this one step farther, Amy. You’re railing against private companies who choose that providing childcare, providing flexible hours for parents, providing these benefits you talk about that the other employees have no need for but would take advantage of if they were in a comparable situation because these companies view it in their best interest. 1A. Government childcare: if an individual can only not become dependent on government funding by having child care that is out of their price range on the job that they have, then why shouldn’t the government provide child care? For example: to move out of section 8 housing, off of welfare, it makes sense to get a job. You are in a single parent household, on welfare, in subsidized housing. Say you have two children, both under the age of 8. You want to a) earn enough money for rent – say $400/month – so $3600 for the year. You want to earn enough for food – say again, $400/month, with a running total of $7200. What other expenses do you have for a child? Oh yeah, child care. Full time child care runs upwards of $200/wk. That’s $10,000 right there. The federal poverty level: $15,020. That’s a side issue, but once you see how much money child care takes out of your income, in a lot of cases, its not worth getting a job. That’s a reason that people stay on welfare. I would venture to say that two programs would better get people off welfare in a constructive manner. 1, finding jobs for people that can sustain them a living wage. 2, somewhere for their child to go where they have a structured environment. Do you want to let you kids roam the streets? No, its more worth it to stay on welfare. 1B. Come on, lets move into the real world. These are PEOPLE we’re talking about, not statistics or thought experiments. 2. ”I don't think saying "I wasn't thinking straight" is an excuse for bringing a child into the world and then neglecting it. I'm sorry, I just don't think it's ever okay for an adult to hurt a child, and I don't care how sorry the adult may be. “ That is absolutely not what I’m saying. These people aren’t making mistakes. People who have different perspectives than we do, or think that killing their child or giving their child away is immoral or wrong, they’re not “not thinking straight.” These people have a right to make their decisions. You can say the government has no obligation to help those people who make these decisions, but until someone – the government, a private citizen, your precious charity give these REAL people other options, I think the government has an obligation to its citizens – children especially. It has nothing to do with being sorry. These kids aren’t sorry. These adults aren’t sorry. They did the right thing in their opinion. How do we work with people who have a different rationale than we do, Amy? 3. Bankrupcy law? We’re all paying for WorldComm. Not an analogous example per se, but I’d prefer to pay for welfare, something that at least has an opportunity to help people rather than corporate bankruptcy. Or corporate freedom to make their own decisions. Poor or not, just because they might contribute to the overall wealth and economy. Just also, even if you make “good choices,” choices you make affect the whole, affect people in other situations than yours. 4. Again, having a child isn’t necessarily a poor choice. That’s our fundamental disagreement. Children aren’t a cult. Children in some cases aren’t even choices sometimes. Children are unplanned sometimes. Sometimes sex is unplanned. Sometimes sex is uneducated. Sometimes sex is involuntary. Sometimes people bite off more than they can chew. So, how do we deal with it? According to your logic, you don’t want to pay for their poor choices, but how do we come up with a constructive solution for their choices? Was the situation any better before we had a social safety net at all? No. When people were left with the consequences of their own decisions? Or inability to get jobs? Or getting fired because they choose they want a family – even if they are going to get child care, come back to work 3 weeks after giving birth, theystill could be fired if not for FMLA and other things like it. I’m going to stop before I get more indignant, more angry. 5. Principles don’t matter to me. People do. But that’s why I am who I am. And that’s why I believe what I believe. :) 6. Moreso, lots of people don't believe in, and follow principles. These principles don't hold up the real world. Unfortunately or not.
Come on, Amy I commented on this, go see the link for a full discussion 1) Who gets free childcare? The government CERTAINLY does not provide it, and if private indistries choose to provide it, then its their right, correct? One of the biggest problems with welfare-to-work programs are the lack of childcare. 2) In a lot of poverty ridden neighborhoods, there is little family structure: let me continue, before you attack me. Either the parents are too busy trying to do what they need to do to be good parents (this includes the entire spectrum from absent parents, parents who spend the check day money on drugs, or those who are trying to break out of the cycle and need to work several jobs). This lack of love and structure in their children's lives lead their children - especially female - to see having a child as a lead to some level of security and the "someone to love me unconditionally" syndrome. These aren't informed decisions. How would you propose we make them informed decisions? Or, seperately, people who don't believe that abortion is moral or right, and who can't bear to part with the being that they have physically sustained and nurtured for nine months for adoption? Just as having sex can be an emotional and a hormonal decision, having a child isn't always as reasoned and as cold-blooded of a decision as you imply. 3) With that in mind, can the government actually not provide for the sustainment of those children? 4) As of the little perks, there is no mandatory child care. "Better hours" - you mean the hours that each parent negotiates with her private job? Trust me, if you had a mother who was forced to work 40 hours a week, entirely nights and weekends by her job and had a little brother at age 2 who asked if you were his mother you'd wish that these things came standard. As for the FMLA, come on! That law is in place to make it a federal crime and a discrimination to be fired for having a baby. Which trust me, has happened as late as 1981, which was the last time it happened to my mother. We're not financing kids through these benefits. We're making children fiscally possible, but also making working and having kids compatible. And i ask which of them are mandated with the exception of the Family medical Leave act and the 2 mentioned in the article. 5) How much does our country spend on welfare? Oh, that's right. An insignificant amount.
Thoughts on Storily... ...Which I have to observe is a pretty good observation on a concept - i like having one word when i refer them them together, because there are too many damn emilys anyway...
John wrote this: "Had dinner with Emily and Storey. You know, I believe it to be very very wrong to get married before 25. But it just seems so abnormally right with them. I'm really excited and happy for them. I can't wait to go out to California for their wedding, and am even happier that most other debaters won't be able to go out so that the toasts are actually about Emily and Storey rather than about apda."
A couple observations.... 1) I'm going to be in California for the wedding. I hope I'm invited. If not, I'm crashing. I'm sorry if that pushes me over the top on John's debater quotient for their wedding. 2) I dont know. I think Storey and Emily hit their APDA quotient by proposing at nats. What else is there to say? 3) What are we toasting with? I think at this point, each of them would not be compromising ideals to have a glass of champagne. Besides, its bad luck to toast with nothing in the glass, and its silly to toast without alcohol :) 4) Emily convinced Storey that he wants children???????? Wow!!!!! 5) What does a toast about APDA consist of? 6) Can John be my godfather? 7) My kids'? 8) Am I friends with Storey or Emily? I havent spoken to either of them in weeks. I've been busy, but just threw out a line and lets see what I get. 9) Maybe I'm not invitred to the wedding. 10) MAybe Storey's afraid of the kinds of toasts i could make.
Busy.... I'm sorry boys and girls that I havent been updating. I've been massively busy at work, and friday I tried to redesign the site, learning Cascading Style Sheets, and still need to learn the "relative positioning" feature. Aside from that, sorry to be busy.
Getting in on it...
Everyone who does drugs is stupid? More later. Christ, Stor...
From Storey... "-The lowlight of the night was being asked for rolling papers by some woman in her early 40's (maybe late 30's). Gimme a break, people! The profiling's tiresome... I guess anything the cops can do, the people of the world can do better, but I get really upset when people think I'm just hoarding papers or drugs or any manner of other garbage. Why can't a guy have long hair (& sometimes facial hair too!) in this country without doing drugs?! WHY?! " Two responses. 1) Roll with the punches, carry rolling papers. :) It will make life easier. 2) Get over it. I'd ask you, but I'd also ask my grandmother if she had any if I needed them :) Besides, its medicinal for many people. Tee hee hee. 3) And no. Long hair automatically means drugs. Did you miss the memo? :)
Great "All I can tell you is that in the corporate world, sometimes things aren't exactly black and white when it comes to accounting procedures," -Bush, in response to a question about his own accounting problems while at Haarken in the insider trading scandal.
1. Fast-food or regular (sit-down) restaurant? Almost always sit down - lots of places to eat in DC. Cept at lunch, even then its the chinese food joint on the next block.
2. If or when you go to fast-food places...drive-through or walk in? Uh, not much drive through in town, especially when you don't have a car.
3. Any restaurant food...eat in or take out?
4. You are at a restaurant and are too full to finish your meal. Do you leave it, or ask to have it wrapped up to go?
5. Where does most of your food come from...restaurants or the grocery store?
6. Do you shop for food at a supermarket or a convenience store?
7. You have 13 items in your cart. Do you try to go through the *12 Items of Less* express line or grit your teeth and get into the regular line?
8. If you shop at a store that has them, do you use the regular or self-scan checkouts?
9. Paper or plastic - Part One...what kind of bags do you take?
10. Paper or plastic - Part Two...which payment method do you use when buying food?
Busk Is Likely to OK Anti-Drug Flights - AP Holy God. We've already shot down a missionary and family. As if flying in South America wasn't bad enough. Also, this program is so bad that George Tenet (head of the CIA) wants nothing more to do with it. He is refusing for the CIA to run it. And the State Department takes it over. Christ, get the hint! Make it feasible for people with addictions to get over them with proper treatment and make the drug trade less profitable and less the-only-option for people. Christ.
Metro Screwups for the Fourth Last year, the metro ran lots and lots of extra trains, rearranged the maps in order to best maximize service, and this year? security reasons? closing smithsonian all day. Great.

Taken from the Post's Media Notes, citation coming soon. Most ridiculous thing I've heard in a while
The blame-Clinton crowd is getting louder, as Josh Marshall observes:
"Why did high-rolling CEOs and CFOs and in-house accountants fraudulently inflate profits? Single-minded focus on market capitalization? Weak regulatory oversight? Poor business ethics? No, it was Bill Clinton and all that unfortunate business with Monica Lewinsky. Apparently the former president just led Ebbers and Lay and their minions down the primrose path.
"Steve Forbes tried this pre-fab spin on for size on Moneyline:
"‚'Well, I think if you want to look at the tone of the '90s, it started right at the top, at the White House, where the attitude was anything goes. If you get caught, spin your way out of it. The only thing they didn't resist – they could resist everything except temptation. So it started at the top.'
"Then a short time later the GOP operative Ed Rogers did the same on Crossfire.
"'That didn't start when Bush was elected or when Bush was sworn in. It started during the Clinton bubble years, where we were all taught from the top down the truth is relative.'
"Who knew corporate America was so impressionable? And took their lead from Bill Clinton?"
Tentative Plans for the Fourth Alright, so we're going to have a barbecue on the early afternoon of the fourth. We figure there will be food (open to really anyone who would like to attend, specifically inviting john, but tell me if you're coming so we know how much food to get). We figure we *might* get ribs again, but more normal barbecue things this time around - hamburgers, etc. If there are those among you who are vegetable-eaters, let me know. We also figure we're also going to get beer and the like - and some specific party supplements for John. We then (hoping no rain like last year) will scale the mall and stand among 10,000 people and lots of terrorists to watch the fireworks. Its fun, no one believes me, but it really really really is.
Yay! Actually doing something more than just once!
1. Cats or dogs? Cats, without a question. They're soft and warm and infinitely less energetic than dogs while being marvelously cute and wonderful. I'm going to get a kitten and name it J.Edgar (to be the counter-Hoover to Herbert), as soon as we live somewhere that will allow us to have a kitten. I think we should ask our landlord, but, well, I don't really live there anyways. But either way, cats are marvelous - they have a more devious personality, and are in general just wonderfullness. If I can't have a kid, I want a cat.
2. Lions or tigers? Tigers...mrow! They've softer and they hide better. Besides, I like jungles better than dry African prairies. Because I like humidity. Yum. And stripes. MMM. And white tigers are pretty.
3. Cows or pigs? when I was younger, I used to really really like cows. I collected them, I had stuffed ones and soft ones and resin ones, and now i have a whole bunch of cow mugs as well as a cow cookie jar that moos when you open the head and when i replace the battery :) So cows clearly win out :)
4. Turtles or frogs? Frogs are so much cuter - I like turtles, but little frogs or big frogs or silver frogs or poison dart frogs who have found consciousness, they rock.
5. Elephants or giraffes? this one is either tougher or easier, because I don't have a strong attachment to either animal. Probably elephants. but I don't know what thats says about me. They both live on the serenghetti, so no climactic reasons for my decision.
6. Butterflies or birds? Butterflies are pretty, but have no substance. Give me a good annoying bird over a bug anyway. Besides, don't birds eat butterflies? making them naturally superior?
7. Deer or moose? Have you ever seen a picture of moose shit? Its funny.
8. Goldfish or swordfish? Since I don't eat fish, I have no reason to like swordfish and have to go with my cute little goldfish that i wish i had. I need to either go get my tank or get a new one. Since I don't seem to be welcome at home, I assume a new one.
9. Bunny rabbits or ferrets? Ferrets. Duh.
10. Horses or unicorns? Unicorns are fake, but they're still both whiter and more colurful than horses. Horses are real, but welcome to my damn blog where unicorns win out. :-P
Tell me what YOU think, leave a comment![or at least do so when commenting is back online, 1:03 pm]
4:53 pm Normal end-of-work rant, but can I just say that i hate 1) scan tron machines, 2) chinese people 3) taiwanese people 4) people who write their mailing addresses in mandarin and 5) ASBMR. I'm now about to go get a goddamned drink :)
I'm sorry... I don't blog more, but I'm too busy trying to figure out why the scantron machine isn't working (the evil ASBMR people broke it when they stole it) and trying to decipher doctor's handwriting - from our class in Taiwan, where 1/3 of them were doctors who wrote in Mandarin. Today is not a good day.
Her name is Sophia Zucco, and she was born Friday, June 14th at 12:51 AM. She's 6 lbs, 6 oz and is 18 inches long. She's Martha's baby, and she's beautiful :) and yay my family :)
