·         Derek actively participated in the San Antonio community. For the San Antonio Sports Foundation he was the Spur's representative.

·         He partnered with B.R.l.C.K. (Brotherhood, Respect, Intelligence, Conduct, Knowledge), a group of young men from 11-14 age group from Martin Luther King Middle School in Cleveland who work for the multiple problems they come across in their neighborhood.

By partnering with Community Build he reached out to the Los Angeles community during his first season with the Clippers. It’s the non-profit organization in South Central Los Angeles operated by Congresswoman Maxine Waters.
