TEEING OFF - TOO GOOD TO BE NORMAL 2. PRO REPORT - SKIP MONTY? TOUGH CALL FOR LANGER 3. QUOTE OF THE WEEK TEEING OFF TOO GOOD TO BE NORMAL The "It's-good-to-be-normal" hounds are loose again and they're going after Michelle Wie and her family, barking at them for stealing her childhood, pressuring her into becoming an adult too soon, skipping school and all man- ner of anti-normal behaviors. But what's so great about being normal? At this year's Hawaii Open, Friday attend- ance was p 22 percent over the same day in 2003. The dif- ference: the presence of the non-standard, irregular, un- common, atypical, extraordinary ninth-grader who is a once-in-a-millennium physical genius at golf. Tiger Woods was asked if he could have made the cut on tour at that age. "No way," he replied. "The same thing would've hap- pened to me at 14 as it did when I was 16 (at the 1992 Los Angeles Open, where he missed by plenty). I wasn't good enough." The "Tiger model" followed by Earl Woods (Tiger's dad) states that you should "dominate at the level you're at before you move on to the next level." That's good advice for most, but Michelle Wie is several cuts above everyone else. Her recent success at the Hawaii Open shows that her development as a savvy, well- spoken and very happy young girl is something to behold. Wie was having a ball -- she even skipped down the 10th fairway for a while until she remembered where she was. Exploitation never looked like this much fun. How many 14-year-olds do you know who could shoot a 68 from the back tees against the best players in the world, then take over the announcers' booth and not miss a beat? Somebody is definitely doing something right. As commen- tator Charlie Reimer said to Ernie Els, "Not only is she trying to take your job, she's trying to take mine, too." Where the critics go wrong is in giving advice geared to an everyday, standard-issue crowd from which excellence flows in a trickle. But with genius, be it intellectual, creative or physical, excellence is a flood that sweeps away those who lobby for sameness and carry on about the need to be normal. "I don't want to be normal," said Wie, and we shouldn't want her to be, either. ------------------------------------------------------------ ** LIQUIDATION SPECIAL - American Flags for $2.49 ** We are pleased to announce that we have found Full-Size 3'x5' American flags available at liquidation prices... never sold before at these low prices. TOUGH CALL FOR LANGER West Palm Beach, Fla. -- Nobody has been in a tougher spot in a Ryder Cup than Bernhard Langer, who missed a 6-foot putt in 1991 that would have enabled the Europeans to re- tain the trophy at Kiawah Island. His opponent that day, Hale Irwin, later said that Langer was put in that posi- tion because he could handle the outcome better than any- one. Langer doesn't have to worry about facing similar pressure now that he's agreed to be the European captain and not try to play in his record-tying 11th Ryder Cup this fall at Oakland Hills, near Detroit. But he could be dealing with an equally dicey situation: Does he leave European star Colin Montgomerie -- with whom Langer was unbeaten as a partner in 2002 -- off the team? Langer acknowledged recently that making his two wild-card picks will probably be the most difficult part of his job. The Hall of Famer also said Montgomerie won't be given a free ride on the team, even though he has the best winning per- centage of any European (66.1) with an overall mark of 16-7-5. "I certainly hope he will make the team because he's a great player," Langer said in a phone interview from La Quinta, Calif. "But you never know. You need to have a good 12 months when qualifying. It's happened to other great players who didn't make a Ryder Cup team be- cause they weren't playing well." Langer was one of them. He was left off the 1999 team, the only Ryder Cup he's missed since 1981. It didn't matter that Langer is second to Nick Faldo on the Europeans' all-time list for matches (42), points (24) and won matches (22). With Montgomerie 25th on both lists for Ryder Cup points and world rankings -- the top five are chosen off the world rankings, then the next five on the European points list who have not al- ready been selected -- it appears the only chance that Montgomerie has is as a wild-card pick in August. He has dropped to 44th in the world rankings. Langer, 46, has plenty of other decisions to make before then. Major de- cisions like what clothes the team will wear, where the players will sleep, and more. Langer said it's important that he and American captain Hal Sutton continue to make sure the matches don't become as antagonistic as they were at Kiawah and at Brookline in 1999. The 2002 matches at The Belfry were relatively free of controversy. "It doesn't matter too much who wins or loses," Langer said. "The game of golf is larger than any one team. I hope these matches are very competitive, but with the highest level of sportsmanship." The last hard thing Langer will have to do as captain is watch the matches. "It's going to be more difficult to be standing on the sidelines," he said. "You kind of feel helpless." ------------------------------------------------------------ The TekFlame... TEEING OFF - Yips are no disease 2. PRO REPORT - NICKLAUS, PLAYER PRESIDENTS CUP CAPTAINS AGAIN 3. QUOTE OF THE WEEK TEEING OFF Yips are no disease In 2003, the Mayo Clinic published a study of the yips and, as you can read below, it didn't sit to well with Chuck Hogan, one of the most original thinkers in the golf business. Chuck believes that the yips are just a piece of learning, not a disease. It's human nature to seek pleasure and avoid pain, and in most cases the choice is clear-cut: We see a snake and run; we see a comfy chair and curl up in it. But when it comes to a short putt, the brain of the yipper is in a quandary. It must stroke the putt to finish the hole and get its reward, but it doesn't want to experience the pain of the miss, a pain that the golfer has blown so completely out of proportion that it must be avoided. Enter Mr. Hogan and his open letter to the clinic: "It is well-documented that golf went from a game played in Scotland to a matter of money, politics, bio-mechanics and a self-esteem issue in the United States. I must say that your recent article regarding the 'yips' was a giant step backward for golf and golfers. "The yips syndrome, regardless of research by the Mayo Clinic, is simply a learned behavior. The human system ... moves away from pain and toward pleasure. When golfers 'learn' that a 2-foot putt is dangerous, the perception generates a vascular shutoff. While the golfer's subcon- scious is moving away, the golfer's conscious mind still moves 'toward' to execute the putt. The simultaneous 'toward-away' demands are manifest and expressed as a spasmodic response. "Then, along comes ... the Mayo Clinic to 'discover' the 'problem. What they find, sure enough, is evidence of fear in the brain-scan imagery. Now they give it a name -- 'dystonia.'" "No solution was offered ... so the golfer is left with the idea that s/he could be the victim at any moment. And, there is no controlling this monster. This is another ADPD (Attention Deficit Putting Disorder -- don't you just love labels?). Isn't it enough that Americans have taken a game (G-A-M-E) and turned it into a job? Isn't it enough that your self-esteem and pecking order is at stake and all about a putt? Well, apparently not - now they've invented a disease. "Suffice it to say that you (Mayo) have taken more joy out of Mudville and added more anxiety to golfers. Since the brain researchers are more interested in research for the sake of research, can't we just keep it in academia where it won't give little golfers nightmares?" ------------------------------------------------------------ * Flag Day Is June 14th! But to hear Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player talk, their greatest moment in golf came last fall when they never touched a club. Six months after their controversial decision to end the Presidents Cup in a tie, Nicklaus and Player are still almost giddy about what happened in South Africa. That explains their recent decision to take sort of a mulligan by agreeing to once again be captains for the 2005 Presidents Cup matches near Washington. The PGA Tour will no doubt hype the matches as "Unfinished Business," making them seem more like a prize fight. But the captains saw nothing incomplete about what happened in South Africa when the United States and International teams finished in a tie. "It was the most exciting and most rewarding event that I have ever been involved with in the game of golf," Nicklaus said. "I've won a lot of golf tournaments, (but) I've never had one that I enjoyed more and enjoyed being part of for what it did for the game of golf, what it did for South Africa, and in general bringing the golfers of the world together. It was sensational." Player, one of South Africa's greatest athletes, echoed those thoughts. "What transpired ... was something that I will never for- get in my life, one of the three greatest moments in my career as a golfer," Player said. "To be playing in South Africa, a country that had been barred due to its apartheid policies from participating worldwide for 48 years, and now having formed this great democracy ... was something that was vitally important, far more important than the golf. And to have an ending as we did was most appropriate. And everybody left feeling very satisfied." PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem said it didn't take long to con- sider asking Nicklaus and Player to return, even though there are plenty of other qualified candidates. Guys like Greg Norman and Nick Price. "That was something we thought about the night after the matches concluded," Finchem said. "We thought it was fitting that Jack and Gary have a chance to finish this, if you will, and go at it again." The Americans have never seemed to take the Presidents Cup matches with the same passion as the Ryder Cup, perhaps because the latter has been around about 65 more years. But that may be changing as well. Nicklaus said Phil Mickelson was one of the unsung heroes of his team even though Mickelson was 0-5 in his matches. Nicklaus said Mickelson was extremely supportive of his teammates, even though he was having a forgettable week, and he thinks that helped Mickelson finally win that first major last month at the Masters. "It was a big turnaround in Phil Mickelson's life," Nicklaus said. "The way he handled himself down there ... he never varied from being supportive and from being a good team member." ------------------------------------------------------------ DESIGNER DAKOTA EYEWEAR Introductory Offer -- $9.99 For ANY Pair of their exclusive line of Sunglasses Normal Retail $59.99 & Up. . .
