But each time the ball splashes into the drink. In utter frustration the golfer said, "Caddie, take my clubs on in, I'm going to jump into the water and drown myself." The caddie replied, "I doubt that, sir. You couldn't keep your head down long enough to drown!" ------------------------------------------------------------ *** SOFTWARE, SOFTWARE, SOFTWARE *** Get news and alerts on software that is available for f-r-e-e either on CDRom or by Download. He has 15 mil- lion miles on his clubs, making him history's most-traveled professional athlete, and he's not slowing down. In the past three weeks, Player said he has gone across 40 time zones doing corporate outings and playing in golf tournaments. So what better person is there to talk to about Ernie Els' latest tussle with the PGA Tour over his world golf schedule? Els recently received a letter from PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem informing him that if he wants more than the standard three releases that a tour member annually receives to play in a "conflicting" event, he must play more than the minimum number of 15 tournaments. Player -- a South African like Els, and among the first golfers to play all over the world -- believes that's wrong. "Ernie wants to prove to everyone he's the best player in the world, not just the best player in the United States," Player said by phone recently from his ranch in Johannesburg, South Africa. "I applaud him for that. That was exactly my same ambition when I was his age. I wanted to be the best player in the world." So does Els. That's why he's the last globetrotting player left among the game's elite. No top player competes around the world more often. A big reason for this is Els loves those appearance fees that can rise above $300,000 in some cases. "To keep your card on the U.S. tour, you have to play 15 events and I have already played more than that, and I haven't finished yet," Els told repor- ters recently in London. "But they are saying they want over 20 and nothing abroad. Naturally, we have to sit down and talk, but one thing is for sure -- don't start putting a pad- lock around me. Don't make a barrier, because that's not going to work." Player praised Tiger Woods' efforts to promote the game around the world, but said he's saddened that so many top American players rarely travel outside the United States. He thinks that hurts not only their game, but the game. "To me, the ultimate test was to win around the world, because you had to adapt to different environments, customs, languages," Player said. "A lot of the American players are so pampered and so spoiled that if things aren't the way they want it or as nice as it is back home, they don't want to play there. Isn't it our responsibility to grow this game around the world?" Els will have played in 18 PGA Tour events this year, with seven of them the four majors and the three World Golf Championships. He has played in seven European events (besides the aforemen- tioned seven that count on both tours). Els also has played in Korea, Australia and South Africa this year. "I have great respect for Tim Finchem, but he needs to remember Ernie was not born in this country," Player said. "It reminds me of some- thing President Eisenhower said to me a long time ago: The world is a very big place, and the U.S. is a very small part of that. We need the world, and the world needs us." ------------------------------------------------------------ Questions? Comments? All For The Love Of The Game" ------------------------------------------------------------ Take a moment to answer GopherCentral's Question of the Week: Who do you think should be the next Supreme Court Justice? http://rd.gophercentral.com/al/a?aid=7541&ent=2501 Question of the Week IN THIS ISSUE: 1. Ask The Pro 2. It's Good For Your Game - TONE DOWN THE TOE DANCE 3. BETTER BODY, BETTER GOLF - YOUR HAMSTRINGS Q: I have a problem with tending to hook the ball off the tee box after several holes. My friends tell me that my club face is shut. What can I do to practice a perfect path for the club? -- Art D., from the Web A: Click here for the answer hook ball club face shut IT'S GOOD FOR YOUR GAME TONE DOWN THE TOE DANCE Lifting your front heel off the ground during the downswing, is not an action the general golfing public should copy. Elevating the heel shoves your weight suddenly to your toes, throws your whole body out of balance, and usually results in an off-center hit with the loss of both distance and accuracy. (You can read more about this in my book, "The LAWs of the Golf Swing," which shows you how to match your swing to your body type.) This toe dance is especially prevalent with juniors and women whose hamstring muscles, the muscles behind the thigh supporting the knee, are not as strong as their quadriceps muscles in the front of the thigh. Therefore, they rely more on the stronger quadriceps to stabilize the knees during the downswing. ------------------------------------------------------------ GEORGE CARLIN AT CARNEGIE HALL NOW ON DVD Easily His Best Stand-Up Performance To Date Taped before a sold-out house at New York City's Carnegie Hall, the performance represents a creative resurgence for Carlin, following a heart attack earlier that year. The hamstrings are an important set of muscles when it comes to making your best swing. These are the large muscles in the back of the thigh that help connect the legs to the pelvis. Many golfers, especially men, have tight hamstrings that limit motion of the pelvis, making cor- rect hip rotation impossible. This restriction causes strain in other muscles of the lower back, contributing to the pain- ful "golfer's back" syndrome. One of the best exercises to keep your hamstrings in shape is as follows: Lie on your back in a doorway and extend your leg as straight as you can get it against the wall while the other leg is flat on the floor. Both knees should be straight and your butt against the wall. At first you may have to bend one or both of your knees to get into the position. But after a week or two your flexibility will improve enough that your knees can be fully extended, so be patient and don't force anything. Hold the position for a minute, then switch legs. Repeat at least three times for each leg. As always, consult your doctor or physiotherapist before doing these exercises to make sure they are right for you. -- T.J. Tomasi After a week or two of exercises, your flexibility will improve enough that your knees can be fully extended. |
