Ask The Pro 2. It's Good For Your Game - TONE DOWN THE TOE DANCE 3. BETTER BODY, BETTER GOLF - YOUR HAMSTRINGS Q: I have a problem with tending to hook the ball off the tee box after several holes. My friends tell me that my club face is shut. What can I do to practice a perfect path for the club? -- Art D., from the Web A: Click here for the answer hook ball club face shut IT'S GOOD FOR YOUR GAME TONE DOWN THE TOE DANCE Lifting your front heel off the ground during the downswing, is not an action the general golfing public should copy. Elevating the heel shoves your weight suddenly to your toes, throws your whole body out of balance, and usually results in an off-center hit with the loss of both distance and accuracy. (You can read more about this in my book, "The LAWs of the Golf Swing," which shows you how to match your swing to your body type.) This toe dance is especially prevalent with juniors and women whose hamstring muscles, the muscles behind the thigh supporting the knee, are not as strong as their quadriceps muscles in the front of the thigh. Therefore, they rely more on the stronger quadriceps to stabilize the knees during the downswing. ------------------------------------------------------------ GEORGE CARLIN AT CARNEGIE HALL NOW ON DVD Easily His Best Stand-Up Performance To Date Taped before a sold-out house at New York City's Carnegie Hall, the performance represents a creative resurgence for Carlin, following a heart attack earlier that year. The hamstrings are an important set of muscles when it comes to making your best swing. These are the large muscles in the back of the thigh that help connect the legs to the pelvis. Many golfers, especially men, have tight hamstrings that limit motion of the pelvis, making cor- rect hip rotation impossible. This restriction causes strain in other muscles of the lower back, contributing to the pain- ful "golfer's back" syndrome. One of the best exercises to keep your hamstrings in shape is as follows: Lie on your back in a doorway and extend your leg as straight as you can get it against the wall while the other leg is flat on the floor. Both knees should be straight and your butt against the wall. At first you may have to bend one or both of your knees to get into the position. But after a week or two your flexibility will improve enough that your knees can be fully extended, so be patient and don't force anything. Hold the position for a minute, then switch legs. Repeat at least three times for each leg. As always, consult your doctor or physiotherapist before doing these exercises to make sure they are right for you. -- T.J. Tomasi After a week or two of exercises, your flexibility will improve enough that your knees can be fully extended. |

All times Eastern GOLF CHUCKLE Worst golfer One day, John Smith decided to go to a new golf course where no one knew him, just to get away and see if he could do better elsewhere. He hired a caddy to guide him around the course. After another day of slices, duff shots, misread putts and bad temper, he was obviously upset. He turned to the caddy and said, 'You know I must be the worst golfer in the world.' The caddy replied, 'I think not sir, I have heard there is a guy named John Smith from across town who is the worst player ever!' PRO REPORT MICKELSON SIGNS WITH CALLAWAY Callaway Golf has pulled off a giant marketing victory, signing Masters champion Phil Mickelson to a long-term equipment and endorsement contract. The Carlsbad, Calif., company announced Tuesday that beginning with this week's Bell Canadian Open, Mickelson, 34, who parted last week with Titleist, will play Callaway metal woods, including a prototype of the Fusion Driver, and a prototype of the HX Tour ball. Mickelson, the world's No. 4-ranked player, will wear the Callaway logo on his shirt and visor and later work with club designer Roger Cleveland to develop his own line of irons, wedges and putter. Mickelson reportedly ended his four-year relationship with Titleist after being denied a renegotiation in the final year of his contract. Financial terms of the Callaway contract were not disclosed. -- Glenn Sheeley |
