Teeing Off -Long bunker shot quite a misunderstood shot Teeing Off -Long bunker shot quite a misunderstood shot Long bunker shot quite a misunderstood shot It is often said that the long bunker shot is "the toughest shot in golf," but it would be more accurate to call it the "the most misunderstood shot in golf." Most golfers faced with a long bunker shot do exactly what they shouldn't do. They swing harder than they normally would for the distance at hand, they change how much sand they take behind the ball (hitting nearer the ball), and they try to carry the ball all the way to the hole. These mistakes lead to inconsistent results at best and complete flubs at worst. Swing with a smooth tempo and allow the ball to run. Instead, your goal should be to: (1) Take the same amount of sand, (2) swing with a smooth tempo, and (3) run the ball to the hole. The adjustments you should make are demonstrated by the golfer in the photos below. His goal is to hit a 50- yard sand shot that lands on the front of the green and runs to the hole. Again, you should not try to hit the sand nearer to the ball than normal for a long bunker shot. Stick with the same amount of sand you normally take and do not add more "effort" than normal with the hands and arms. ------------------------------------------------------------ Courses Facing a Daunting Cleanup West Palm Beach, Fla. -- Move over, Donald Ross, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Fazio. There's been a redesign on many of your South Florida courses, courtesy of Hurricane Frances. Whether it was the storm surge that transformed Palm Beach Par 3 into a huge lake with 18 mounds barely visible (they're the greens), or the 200 fallen pine trees at Loblolly Pines Golf Club in Hobe Sound that have taken the bite out of the doglegs, Florida golfers will find radically changed golf courses. Whenever it is they get to play them again. "We've lost a lot of key trees that shape the doglegs," said Rick Whitfield, Loblolly's director of golf. "And we've got four fairways that are cover- ed with orange sand that blew out of the waste areas. It's like we've moved 20,000 cubic yards of dirt. It's unbelievable. I've never seen anything like it." Nobody else has, either. The first hurricane to strike this area in Eastern Florida in about 75 years will leave a lasting mark on the self-proclaimed Golf Capital of the World. While it's impossible to estimate the total damage -- golf course operators in the hardest-hit areas in Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties have had difficulty even reaching their courses, or being reached by phone -- the destruction is expected to be in the millions of dollars. This much seems obvious: Golf courses closest to the coastline, or north of where the eye made landfall or that have tree-lined fairways aren't going to be open for play any time soon. The most aptly named course these days is Lost Tree Club in North Palm Beach, which sustained major damage.
