Chapter 3: The News
Kevin felt his knees quake beneath him. In front of him Jill and Jimmy both laid
dead. He felt as if he was in a daze. He hoped that he would wake up and everything
would be fine, but he would never wake up. He went to the phone and dialed 911.
Kevin sat on the curb as the paramedics wheeled Jill’s and Jimmy’s dead bodies
out. He sat with his head in his hands rocking back and forth, saying to himself “What
am I going to do?” Footsteps approached him, they stood beside him until Brian’s voice
said, “I’m sorry Kevin, we knew how much she meant to you.” Kevin looked up to see
Brian, A.J., Nick and Howie. He rose to his feet and walked to his car. Brain called after
him, “ Where are you going?” Kevin started the engine and swallowed hard. It felt like
there was a rock in his throat. “ I have to go and tell Reanna and Dana.”
Kevin drove over to his mom’s house. He trudged up to the house and opened the
door. His mom read his unpleasant look and asked him “What’s wrong baby?” Kevin
told her the tragic events that happened only hours ago. She clasped a hand over her
mouth and gave out a muffled cry. Tears ran down her cheek as she hugged him. With a
heavy head, Kevin walked into the living room to find Dana playing dolls. She looked up
and saw him. Kevin sat down on the couch and placed her in his lap.
“What’s wrong
Kevin?” She asked when a solitary tear ran down his face. Kevin swallowed hard and
said “Dana, your mommy died tonight.” Dana’s expression became saddened, “Will she
come back?” Kevin’s eyes brimmed with tears as he said, “No sweetie she won’t.”
Dana’s eyes filled with tears as she whimpered “But who will read to me and fix me
snacks and tuck me in at night and be with me when I’m scared and who’s going to tell
me I love you?” She cried on to Kevin’s shirt. Kevin swallowed and said softly, “I will.”
Dana looked at him and hugged him. She cried herself to sleep. Kevin gently laid her
down on the couch and asked his mom if she could stay there tonight. His mom said yes
and Kevin hugged her. He left to go tell Reanna.
He pulled into the driveway of Sarah’s house. He went up to the door and rang the
doorbell. Sarah’s mom and dad came to the door. Kevin asked “Would you both step
outside for a moment?” They both stepped outside and closed the door. Sarah’s dad
asked “What’s going on?” Kevin took a deep breath and said “Jimmy killed Jill tonight
and then killed himself.” There was a silence. Sarah’s mom gasped and whispered “This
is going to kill Reanna.” “I know.” Kevin said grimmly as he walked into house. He
found Reanna and Sarah watching a movie. Reanna looked up and questioned “What are
you doing here Kev?” Kevin couldn’t take it anymore, he broke down and cried. Reanna
walked over to him and worriedly asked “What’s wrong Kevin?” “Jimmy killed your
mom tonight and then killed himself.” Reanna’s face went blank. She stood there for a
moment. Her knees wouldn’t hold her up anymore, she collapsed onto the floor and
cried. She asked herself over and over again “Why now? Why her? Why did you take her
away from me?” She cried until she threw up. Kevin could only hug her , because he had
no answers. Reanna could barely walk, so when it was to go Kevin picked her up and
carried her to the car. They drove to Kevin’s mom’s house, where both Reanna and
Kevin fell asleep crying.
