About Elias H. Tingle

On June 7, 2000, there was a reception in the Library Media Center of Indian River High School to celebrate Elias H. Tingle and officially name the Center after him.

Mr. Tingle was the first librarian of the consolidated Indian River High School and served for nine years. The idea to name the Library Media Center after Mr. Tingle originate with Mrs. Martha White, who became the librarian when Mr. Tingle retired. Mrs. Elizabeth Tiffany, the current Library Media Specialist, obtained School board approval and arranged the reception.

There were many people in attendance at the reception. Mrs. Jackie Tingle, widow of Mr. Tingle, and numerous family members and friends attended. Mr. Greg Hastings, President of the Indian River School District Board of Education, was in attendance. Other key speakers were Representative Charles West, Dr. Everett Toomey and Mr. Mark Steele. Several retired teachers attended and spoke of fond remembrances of Mr. Tingle as a mentor for both teachers and students alike. Family members also have testimony of their memories of Mr. Tingle as an educator, "a man with a heart towards youth, and as a man with a thirst for learning."

Ms. Tiffany displayed a framed picture of Mr. Tingle, an engraved plaque, and the proclamation. These items are hung in the Elias H. Tingle Library Media Center.
