PANFLUTE: The panflutes used
on Fernan's recordings are known as "siku" among the Andean people. This instrument is indigenous to South America. Other types of panflutes are found around the world including Romania, Greece, China and Papua New Guinea. Made from bamboo, the siku consists of two rows of tubes, together creating a scale. Sound is created by gently blowing across each tube. The original siku was pentatonic (5 note scale) and made from clay, stone and bones.
CHARANGO: This 10 string instrument was done from the back of an armadillo. Nowdays it is made from wood. The instrument was developed in South America by the natives after the introduction of the guitar by the Spanish. The sound is high pitched and distinct. The charango enjoys popularity in both Peru and Bolivia. The strings are tuned as follows: GG CC EE AA EE with the middle E being one octave appart
