Dylan's transitional fourth album was his last acoustic LP for over two decades, signifying his switch from protest song to the politics of love and the great leap forwards beyond folk music. It was time to look inward, where the spirits of William Blake and Dylan Thomas awaited him....
The title was producer Tom Wilson's idea. "I begged and pleaded with him not to do it, it seemed like a negation of the past which in no way was true," said Dylan.
