Construction of a ScoutCanu Underway !!!

8.24.2002

My son wanted a canoe to fish a little waterhole that he found, so we decided to build a ScoutCanu.

Took a couple of sheets of ply and faced the good sides. Cut 18" of of the ends so the boat will end up around 13 feet long. I added an extra foot over the plans to cover dad's big butt and maybe sis as a passenger too. Once I had the proper length, we cut 10" off each edge, for the side panels. This left two 28" x 78" bottom panels. On the right are the 4 side panels and left are the 2 bottom panels.

Curve layed out and cut. I was going to use the scrap for the skeg, as the curve would be perfect but it was not to be. More about this later. I did much of the layout and cutting as my son was out of town with mom and sis, taking another sister to college. I put a couple screws into the ply to hold it together while I cut the curve.

Used the side panel to lay out the bottom curves. Can you see the problem here? Hint: I didn't follow my own plans.

Here you can see a little better my goof up. With the lines as they are, the "Canoe" will look more like a barge. Still I forged on.
