Fan Art - Art Based on Others' Works

Date Completed: July 9, 2003
This drawing is both a celebration of the original Final Fantasy game, recently remastered and rereleased by Squaresoft. The character graphics, both in the original game and the newer, polished version, are so cute, I really wanted to do a picture of them fearlessly plumbing the depths of a dungeon!

I also did the piece with the intent that the original go to some friends of mine who recently moved away, back to their home in Arizona.
Original Size: (3" x 3")
Materials Used: pencil, pen and ink, markers

Date Completed: Early April, 2003
This piece was inspired by a work by a fellow member of the Gaia online community, named Mikagami.

This character gave me an interesting idea to play with: A dragon-like symbiote living inside a human being who would ooze out of his skin and envelope him, in parts or inside a great big dragon body. I also used this as an excuse to play with coloring and smudging and shading with pencil.

You can see the original picture by Mikagami here.

Inspired by a fellow Final Fantasy nut, who actually created the animation and design for this odd little creature. Blackberry is what you get when you cross a Black Mage with Master Tonberry.

Gao Gai Gourd Wrath of an Angry Gourd

These two pictures were done as a sort of tribute to a Japanese giant-robot show called Gao Gai Gar. The reason I don't use the word "parody" or "spoof" is because the show is actually already a parody of its genere, with its huge, vaguely humanoid robot made up of a number of smaller mechanical animal and vehicle componennts, and so many big add-ons and rediculously powerful super-weapons that it's a marvel the thing can even move in battle.

I thought it would be fun to do my own version, Gao Gai Gourd (above). Once I finished the initial drawing, I thought it would be amusing to do a second one (below), looking all flaming and menacing, to be titled "Wrath of an Angry Gourd"

--Okay, so, bad pun, but I'm happy with the way the pictures came out.

Final Fantasy Kids I
Although it's true that Cloud and Aerith didn't know each other as children, I've always wanted to do a series of pieces called "Final Fantasy Kids", with young versions of different characters going on adventures. This is my first "FFK" drawing, involving my favorite Final Fantasy couple, Cloud and Aerith.

Final Fantasy VII, the game that these characters are from, is special to me because it's the first RPG my girl and I ever played together, and the third game of any kind, after Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo and Myst.

--It has quite a bit of sentimental value for both of us.
Original Size: 8.5 x 11"
Materials Used: Mechanical pencil, pen and ink, Tombow brush pens

This is another piece of "crossover" fan art, taking two worlds or stories and blending them. This time, it's a Medabots-themed picture using Megaman and Roll. I mostly used the look of Megaman from the Megaman Legends games, since it leads itself more to the Medabots style. Of course, I added the mask and glowing yellow eyes, similar to Metabee's.
I think Roll would make a great "robattler", since she always plays the helful and encouraging backup for Megaman in the Legends games.
"Let's go, Megaman!"

A picture of CyberPumpkin and Gen, based on the recently imported anime, Medabots. Since As you can see, I did some re-designing of CyberPumpkin to make him fit better as a Medabot. Since I had already created a human partner character (Gen, shown) I included him to be the "robattler", the owner of the Medabot. I originally created Gen to be a character in an online role-play/group fan fiction based on Digimon, where CyberPumpkin was his Digimon partner (pictured below). Since Medabots follows the trainer/fighter concept also found in Pokemon, it's easy to imagine Gen and CP hopping from one story-world to the next with little or no change!

Date Completed: 10/12/01
A second piece featuring Gen and CyberPumpkin in the world of Medabots. Like nearly everything I do, both of these originated as something I drew to pass some time, or while listening to something else. The first one was drawn on the back of a church paper, while this one started on some scratch-paper while I was at the library.
You can also see a little bit of my "pipes" work in the borders.

The first time I saw people playing the arcade game Dance Dance Revolution, I was hypnotized. It looked like a lot of fun, despite the fact that the "dancing" involved was actually just stomping the big buttons with your feet.
I knew I had to try it, though. I waited until Christmas time, when we went back to Idaho to visit my family. I really wanted to play the game with my sister, who is four years younger than me and has been taking dance lessons since she was about five years old. I figured my video gaming experience might make up for my lack of actual dancing ability.
As it turned out, I was only slightly better than her at DDR. To this day, I'm still barely able to keep up with a beginner-level-two song, let alone the amazingly fast, syncopated rhythms found at the upper levels. Still, I had a blast with this game, and it showed up in some of the stuff I drew after that.

Date Completed: Summer '99
In the summer of 1999, I took part in an online game that was set in the world of Digimon, but with a new set of "Digidestined" characters. The game, hosted in a specially created messaging forum, was referred to an RPG (role-playing game), but in actuality, it unfolded much more like a group-written story, since we were, of course, unable to all participate all at the same times.
Once school started, most of the participants drifted away, but it was a lot of fun while it lasted.
This is my colored illustration of Gen (pronounced like "gun", but with an "e"), and a Digimon version of CyberPumpkin.

"Mega Matt as a Bomberman Character"
A picture of "Mega Matt" (my brother Matt a Mega Man character), drawn in the style of a Bomberman character. Confusing?

The kicker is that Matt really does wear goggles like that, and sports a long blond ponytail (or at least he did, until it turned blue), and has a scepter like the one in the picture.
