TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR WELLNESS
A Message from the Black Cross Society

Have you ever heard the old adage you are what you think or perhaps you are familiar with, as a man thinketh so is he? Most recently we have all been exposed to the “Secret” which claims that the secret to living the lives we dream of all have to do with the universal law of attraction. For us who are well versed in our African History we know first hand that this has been apart of our heritage from an ancient time. However somewhere along the way via psychological and physical enslavement we have lost since of our original selves and adopted, bought into and accepted a victim mentality as it relates to many areas of our lives. Somewhere along the way we have forgotten our divine right and entitlement to abundance in all areas of life and like Denzel’s Washington’s character expresses in “The Great Debaters” we have lost control of our righteous minds after having it seriously damaged by the Willie Lynch philosophy, we must reclaim our greatness and begin to live from a perspective of wellness be it mind, body or spirit.
I’m sure you know someone or perhaps you are that person who sees themselves through the veil of a disease or sickness. Many in our communities have taken on sickness as cause and a way of life. We wear our sickness as a badge honor. What has really happened and this will be tough for some of us to admit but in fact we have allowed the ego to take over and lead. We are victims and we proudly wear the victim’s suit of amour, yet we wonder why we are still sick, and we curse and persecute those who can’t seem to give us the attention we so rightly deserve because we are sick. I really don’t mean to come off harshly and their are some who may be reading this saying well my sickness is legitimate and there is nothing I can do about except take the medications and see my doctor on a regular basis as directed. Don’t get me wrong of course there are things that can go astray regarding our general health, however what has been heavy on my heart is our commitment to fighting disease as a opposed to being committed to being well. You see there is a difference.
The universal law of attraction is at play here and that which we focus the most attention on will keep showing up in our lives and when we are operating from the perspective of the ego then the ego says, “no matter what I must be fed” thus living through the identify of a sickness is a wonderful way for ego to have its way. Yet we claim to come from a righteous people who were capable of building structures that still today awe the greatest minds of the world. We have come from people who were able to see beyond the 9 planets in our solar system before the first telescope was ever invented (the Dogons). We have come from people who have been able to with just a look upon an oppressor turn the tide of evil away from them and those they loved. With all this, you mean to tell me we can take better responsibility for our wellness?
Remembering who you are is the first step and understanding your entitlement to greatest is key. If we want to be well and if we want our communities to be well we must understand that it begins with each and every one of us. Don’t expect to change the outer without changing the inner. It just doesn’t happen that way. Begin to invite wellness into your life no matter what your situation is. As Garvey said, “emancipate yourself from metal slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds. That is were freedom begins, in the mind. I stated in the beginning of this article “as a man thinkith, so is he”, “you are what you think”, all three of these jewels are communicating the same thing. We must learn to delve deeper into the meaning of things and not simply take them as beautiful crafted sayings that make us feel warm and cozy. We have a responsibility for our wellness, and no one is going to give it to us but us.
I implore upon you to invite wellness into your life. If you have a sickness that you are living with love yourself nonetheless, begin to see yourself as a beautiful and worthy being of greatness and perfect health, learn to live from a place of spiritual peace not from the dark bowels of egoic thinking. Begin to see yourself where you want to be instead of where you don’t want to be. When you do this you will miraculously see how people and circumstances begin to arise in your life to assist you in evolving to that place where you actually want to be. For instance many people are confused and afraid to take on healthier lifestyles because they feel it may too expensive or it may be too hard or it may be boring, well that thinking is first of all destructive. Change the way you think and change your life. When you begin to invite wellness in, things will begin to happen little by little showing you that you are not alone after all. You’ll begin to receive information on simple ways to incorporate a healthier lifestyle that can be exciting, inexpensive and easy.
You see advertisers have gotten it all figured out. They know just how to play on our psychology to get us to buy into unhealthy lifestyles, but in the spirit of reclaiming our righteous minds and remembering from whence we came we have more power within us to recondition ourselves to wellness. You have all heard of the miracles some people undergo where they have been cured of a supposedly incurable disease; well understand that their thought process had a lot to do with it. Many of us are thinking ourselves into sickness, rather it is a mental sickness like depression or a condition such as obesity.
It’s time that we understand and take responsibility for our individual wellness and then we will collectively see the benefit manifested in communities that will likewise be well, sustainable and progressive.
