CHANGE - A Message from the UNIA-ACL President-General
Hon. Cleophus Miller Jr.
Greetings Garveyites
As I was sitting in my Living Room listening to CNN News following the Presidential Primary Election Campaign, I began to reflect on many of the issues that the Honorable Marcus Garvey and members of this Great Organization during its glory days faced. The subject of change was constantly mentioned. This seems to be the theme that Barack Obama’s campaign is centered around.
While the word change is used so freely one only has to look back a few days to see that while some things have changed, many things still remain the same. Here we have a Black man running for the highest office in The United States and he is still seen as incompetent and unable to run the affairs of The United States of America. We still have Negro (Black) people being brainwashed by Whites with whom they are politically connected and are trying to discredit Senator Obama and our race as a whole.
Which brings me to the point; we need to change the Para dyne. We as an organization need to search deep within our ranks to find a way that we can begin to see ourselves as a people differently. If one would only go back to the 1920 era, during the First International Convention, when Garveyites from all around the world created and presented to the League of Nations a Declaration of Rights for us as a people.
This Declaration gave us a racial pride and dignity which was the beginning of change for us as a people. Even in this day and time we have not fully grasped what the Declaration of Rights means to our race. I challenge Garveyites today to look deep within ones self and see what changes need to be made. We as an organization have to continue to change ourselves as well as change things around us if we are to continue the legacy that was laid out for this Great Organization.
This should be our charge and we should let no one stand in our way.
