Re: [PROTEL EDA USERS]: Protel vs Pads ?
<x-flowed>
I can speak from personal experience having used several packages over the
last 10 years - Protel 99SE has had the shortest learning curve for me. I've
been using it for about 1 month now and I can run circles around PADS with
it!! With Protel it's very easy to create custom components and edit designs
on the fly, but not with PADS.
I've never understood how PADS developed such a following - it's probably my
lease favorite design tool and It's never been easy to use (I'd rather do
boards in AutoCAD than use it!)
Also I have worked many years in PCB manufacturing and The gerber and n/c
drill data from Protel is much cleaner than PADS. One (of many) of my pet
peeves is that PADS does not "flash" the surface mount pads and this is a
problem for the bare board testing programs board shops use, because even if
you provide an IPC format netlist the test programs see the pads as
unterminated traces and lots of errors occur. There is a much better chance
of getting what you want right out of the box with Protel!.
