[PROTEL EDA USERS]: the One True sort order

What is the "right" way to sort footprints ?

Geddes seems to be saying he wants footprints to be sorted like
  0603
  1206
  12W
  144W
  16W
  40W
  44W
  604
  700W
? (simple ASCII sequence).

Protel SE99 currently sorts footprints like
  12W
  16W
  40W
  44W
  144W
  604
  700W
  0603
  1206
... (What is the name for this ? Alphanumeric sort ?)

I suspect there's a subtle bug there, but I don't know the "right" way to sort
footprints.

Would you mind explaining the "right" way ?
I think that would be more productive than expecting us (and Protel) to read
your mind.

Subject: RE: [PROTEL EDA USERS]: Place Part bug/annoyance
My main problem can be seen in the PCB library. My footprint "44W" is found
before "0603", and "43860". They are clearly forgetting to ignore the length
of the name (if it starts with a number).

The footprints should be sorted as if the names are "text", even though they
start with "numbers". My footprints aren't an indication of numeric value,
so why are they sorted that way?

I agree that the R10 after R9 is far superior, but they haven't finished the
job.
