REASON FOR WOMEN ONLY: It is the common belief that knowledge is power. The Hope Place's motives are not so much based on the assumption that knowledge is more accessible to men than to women, but on the fact there are many different situations that involve only women. These circumstances require women to know crucial information and
be
able to act on it. Some knowledge may not be so easily attainable. This is especially true for women who don’t speak Dutch or are new to The Netherlands. Imagine the difficulty for mothers working in Amsterdam to have time to investigate or research answers while still performing her functions as an employee and mother. Without easy access to valuable, COMPREHENSIVE
information, a gap is often formed and leaves a feeling of helplessness.
Sometimes we don’t realize that
a simple thought about a topic really IS an issue that should be investigated. For instance, a newcomer to The Netherlands with school aged children can find out how to register her children into school quite easily. However, the next issue should be how her children’s education levels compare to that of Holland: Will your child(ren) exceed their native grade level? Will he/she be demoted, or repeat the same level again? This
issue impacts the children’s educative and social experience since they will
either be younger or older than their classmates and can experience harrassment
from fellow students because of it. Have you given this much thought? Consider if there are ways of testing the child(ren)’s knowledge in order to be properly placed in the appropriate level while having Dutch lessons. Also, are there procedures of comparing former school records with the
class level in The Netherlands to also appropriately place the child in the
correct level These and other issues of home life are often left up to the mother to query -- very sensible, very realistic. With
this in mind, The Hope Place is designed to help clients access this
information.
