August 22, 2000 This semester, I am teaching a class, and today was the first day that it was going to meet. I am teaching the class with a friend of mine, and we have been really excited about meeting our students. As class started, our students walked in, and my co-leader, Heather, began to introduce ourselves. When everyone had arrived, we had each of our students introduce themselves and then we had them tell a little about themselves. This seminar isn't one of your typical seminars at college. My co-leader and I are teaching an honors seminar for freshman, and the point is to introduce them to the campus, to other students, and get them acquainted to college life. Sitting through my first class with these students, I couldn't help but think back to when I was in their positions. I took the same seminar, and I can still remember walking into my seminar late. I looked around the room, and I saw eleven other people that I didn't know. More so, I saw eleven people that I thought I had nothing in common with, except maybe for this kid Ken who was a computer engineer like me. But, by the end of the semester, I found eleven new friends that I know I can go up to say hi to. These are the connections that I will be glad that I made in college later on in life. To this day, I still talk to some of the kids in my freshman honors seminar, and I am really glad that we are as close as we are. Compared to my initial impression of the honors seminar, I am really glad to say that it seemed as if my freshman had a completely different experience. From the beginning, it seemed like the kids are really comfortable with each other. I can already see some friendships being created. My co-leader and I talked after the class and we were so excited. We couldn't help but smiling because the class had gone so well. We were more than ecstatic because we saw that our kids were beginning to bond with each other. What a wonderful day!!! |
