Did You Know? Michigan is home to 8 species of woodpeckers. Two of the most common are the Downy and the Hairy Woodpecker. Both are black and white. (The males have a red spot on the back of their heads.) If the bird's bill is as long as its head, it is a Hairy Woodpecker; a bill shorter than the length of its head is a Downy Woodpecker.
