The Kumeyaay people have lived in what is now known as San Diego County and Baja California, including the Poway Valley, for millennia. The Kumeyaay hunted, grew crops, held religious ceremonies, and raised families in the river valleys of this region.

The formerly knownSilver Lake Archaeological Site is 2.86 acres and is believed to have been part of a 30-acre Kumeyaay village that prospered along Poway Creek approximately 300 years ago.
