Unfair Advantage
Unfair Advantage were a band from my hometown. They played melodic pop-punk, and adhered to the DIY ethic of punk by putting out an EP independently. They gained a large local fanbase by gigging non-stop at pubs, venues, and wherever else could hold them. They broke up when lead singer/guitarist Angelo Licsi left to attend university, but lead guitarist Martin Brzozowski and bassist Michael Panacci still play together in Aurora, and drummer Mike Grimsditch plays for Unsensored.
Ground Zero [EP] (2001)
8 Thumbs Up
Despite their seniority in the local scene, Unfair Advantage was only able to record one four song EP. The stand out track on the EP is definitely "Wash Away," one of the best slow, melodic pop-punk songs I've ever heard. The other tracks are great, too. Opener "Boxfight" is a slightly faster way to open the EP, and "48 Hours" and "More Than I Can Say" round it out as catchy lovestruck tracks. Okay, let's face it: all the songs on this EP are about the pain and trials of loving someone who just doesn't love you. But while their songs sound whiny when you read the lyrics, when you're actually listening to the song, it seems catchy and unnoticeable. This is the way bands should be writing sad love songs. Unfair Advantage could do it right. Now that they're gone, they're sorely missed.
